Importance of Catcher's EquipmentSubmitted by Ben Theismann Tue, 13 Jan 2009
Catcher's equipment is by far the most important and difficult baseball gear to purchase. Unlike other positions on the field, catchers need extensive safety gear to protect against foul balls, a pitchers fastball, errant bats, and base runners looking to beat a close throw at the plate. Thus, buying catchers equipment that fits correctly and protects most of the body is of utmost importance for anyone playing the position.
Catcher’s gear should include eight very important pieces of equipment including shin guards, chest protectors, catchers helmet, throat guard, protective cup, a high quality mitt, and knee savers. Choosing each of these pieces of equipment can be tricky and almost every equipment manufacturer has their own sizes and "spin" on the traditional product. A catcher’s helmet may be the number one most important piece of equipment a catcher can own. A misjudged fastball or stray bat can do serious damage up to and including death. A full helmet that fits snuggly with solid padding and a good mask is a must. Recently, hockey style baseball helmets are becoming very popular. They offer all of the protection needed at the position with a more open mask for clear vision in the field. They're also easy to remove for fouls and pop-ups. Shin guards and chest protectors are probably the next most important pieces to own. While it may seem easy to order these items, a few simple tips could be an injury saver down the road. Make sure you order guards and a chest protector that are snug. Loose pieces can cause hazards in the field. You'll also want the shin guards to run all the down to the tops of your shoes. A chest protector with an extension to cover to your throat and clavicle are also a good way to go. Selecting a good quality glove might be almost as important as a good helmet. Depending on league rules, you could easily be catching 150+ balls a game and you'll do your hands a great favor by using the best glove available. Soft padding and a larger glove are the two things that can provide more protection while not affecting your play. Throat guards and knee savers aren't extremely important depending on the type of equipment you've ordered above but are certainly a good idea to have. Throat guards are sometimes included on the chest protector and do exactly what it says. Knee savers are a must even for younger players. Catchers squat for a couple hours and a good knee saver can help extend a career or save soreness. Use these important tips on catcher’s equipment and be sure to have a safe, successful season.
