The value of self defense has somewhat become a need nowadays as there are simply dangers out there which one can't just deny. The mugger hiding in the shadows, waiting for potential victims, or the would-be assailant, certain to deprive passer bys of their money and valuables, these and more represent the very dangers which people have to arm themselves against. Arm themselves against with the very values self defense.

As a form of self defense, Karate is quite popular, as it is quite effective against opponents, resolving situations fast, easy and simple. As a Martial Art form, it is the most popular hailing from the land of the Rising Sun, Japan. Popularized and noted in pop culture, as well as in history, Karate is basically a martial art from geared to from "fighting machines" out of Karate students. Its name translates to "empty hand" only emphasizing the unarmed nature of Karate, negating the need of using or having weapons in quelling a volatile scenario. Practitioners of Karate are referred to as Karateka.

In the 1980s a movie entitled "The Karate Kid" showed viewers the various regimen involved in Karate training. The movie somewhat stoked the fires of Karate's popularity, making the Martial Art more popular than ever. Today, the views and opinions aimed towards Karate hasn't changed much, as it is still seen as a form of self defense, one which is sure to deliver when needed to.

Karate is often practiced for its self defense value, but is also known for its positive fitness aspect, which is another reason why many delve into the discipline. Karate is also known to enhance particular values in dedicated Karate practitioners. The values of discipline, determination and dedication are all given importance in Karate, and are each developed though the codified traditions of training involved in Karate. Also, Karate is known to boost up one's self confidence, enhance one's self meditation skills, as well as improve one's character towards solutions and outcomes.

As a martial art, Karate involves combat movements. Kicks and punches are among the most basic of Karate moves. Karate throws are also present, as well as joint manipulations, locks, traps and even vital point striking operations.

All in all, arming oneself with the basics of Karate would be enough to thwart those with malicious intent towards one's well being, as it is indeed a form of self defense to be reckoned with.
