Pontoon Boats: What are They?

Submitted by corrieduana

Pontoon boats are boats with a flat bottom. Pontoons also refer to floats used for supporting a structure on water. They can be made from cylinders like pipes and barrels or fabricated boxes made from concrete or metal. These materials can be used for supporting a platform creating a raft-like vessel that is very much similar to a houseboat.

In general, pontoon boats run slower and are relatively safer to use. Not to mention, they are a lot less expensive to insure. Pontoon boats are also the most popular vessels for rentals and offer the biggest value in capacity to their purchase price.

In various parts of the world, people use pontoon boats as small ferry boats for crossing rivers and lakes. Pontoon boats can be powered by a motor engine or by another boat. There are also cable-pulled pontoon boats also called "Punts" in Australia and New Zealand, which are typically pulled by a motor or by applying human force to the cable to guide the boat across the river.

The very first pontoon boat was invented in the United States by a Minnesota farmer. The concept of the motorboat originated from pontoon bridges used by the military in early times. Pontoons are used to support floating bridges and docks. The dock's case is called the pontoon and its sophisticated shape as well as construction is used to hold an aircraft so that they can be operated on water.

These pontoons may contain a landing device in order for the aircraft to operate on land and water. The types of aircraft used to operate on both land and water are called floatplanes. These planes are different from flying boats because the latter's fuselage creates a waterproof hull.

Pontoons are very useful in salvaging sunken ships. Aside from this, they can also be used for supporting cranes that lift boats using cables while in some cases they are attached to the ship below the water.

What is so good about pontoon boats is that they are stable and very safe. Unlike regular fishing boats, pontoon boats allow you to move freely because of their flat floor. Also, pontoon boats are lighter compared to yachts and are very economical to use.

Because of this, pontoon boats are popular for a variety of personal uses. Having a pontoon boat allows you to enjoy wonderful moments with your family and friends on water. On a pontoon boat you can go fishing with your buddies, have fun skiing, boarding or cruise your way to an island. The options are practically limitless.
