Potted History of Real Madrid
The status of Real Madrid Football Club in the present day is highly regarded, and they are widely considered to be one of the premier teams in Spanish football. With fans around the world, their popularity has spread far beyond the coasts of Spain, and they were voted the most successful team of the twentieth century by FIFA. But how did the club that was formed as Sociedad Madrid in 1902 go on to achieve such success?

Socidad Madrid Football Club was formed on the sixth of March 1902, and in 1909 President Adolfo Melendez signed an agreement declaring the formation of the Spanish Football Association. This clearly set Madrid FC as one of the founding Spanish league teams. In 1920, the club was renamed ‘Real Madrid', after permission from King Alfonso VIII -‘Real' in Spanish translates to ‘Royal'. Successes then came easily, and the newly named Real Madrid won their first League title in the 1931/32 season, and again the following year, making them the first Spanish team to win a League title twice.

However, this glory was not to last, as the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) tore the country apart. Amongst the many ruined buildings was Real Madrid's stadium. A new one was therefore built, and opened in 1947. This stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, is still Real Madrid's home pitch today, and is usually full real-Madrid tickets sell quickly. From this point Real Madrid began to make their real mark on world football, and by the 1980s they appeared practically unbeatable: in this decade alone they won two UEFA Cups, five Spanish Championships, three Spanish Super Cups and one Spanish Cup.

Today Real Madrid is the richest football club in the world, and has attracted such international star players as David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos. It also won La Liga in 2007, beating off its main rival Barcelona. This success is all the more remarkable when it is considered that the Spanish Civil War caused football to be halted, meaning that in the 1940s it had to be rebuilt almost from nothing.
