It is important to remember what you want the riding jacket for before making your choice. Do you require a jacket with specific safety features that can include protective padding, reflective piping or reflective strips, do you want a jacket suitable for heavy rain that would require a windproof or waterproof outer layer or would a lightweight breathable jacket be more suitable? There are many equestrian jackets that provide the showing rider or competition rider with the correct image for their discipline as well as specific features needed from their jackets.

Whatever it is that a rider wants from their equestrian jacket comfort and quality should be paramount. The jacket should fit properly allowing the rider freedom of movement across their shoulders and arms in particular, vents in the back of longer jackets, e.g. show jackets, for comfort and suitability when riding and the material that the jacket is made from is an important factor as its durability and practicality may not be suitable for its purpose. There are many additional features including pockets, high necks, tailored and adjustable cuffs, two way zips and adjustable waistbands that some casual jackets come with to make horse riding an easier and safer experience.

Numnahs are usually made from layers of felt or foam and are designed to offer protection from chaffing and shock. These layers are in-between a tougher outer cover. They can be made from a tough fleece or fake fur material that also provides additional comfort. Numnahs are usually cut in a saddle shape and are more commonly used for everyday hacking, schooling, pleasure riding and show jumping. They come in a wide variety of colours, neutral colours are often used for dressage and show jumping competitions where as brighter colours are frequently seen during cross country events or team events.

Saddlepads and Saddlecloths can be made from the same materials as numnahs. These are square in shape, also offering padded protection and shock absorption whilst keeping the saddle clean. Saddlepads and saddle cloths are frequently used in competitions as pins or team badges can be attached to them just behind the rider's leg. There are varying colours but neutral is more commonly seen during competitions.

There are many variations of numnah, saddlepad and saddlecloth that today help to alleviate minor problems associated with ill fitting saddles. There are many designs that can be found on our online store to help with minor problems, offering anything from wither protection and raising the front of the saddle, to extra padding and the use of lambskin wool for extra comfort. It is important to note that problems with poorly fitting saddles cannot be corrected using numnahs or saddlepads. Continuous problems should be investigated and a qualified saddle fitter's opinion should be sought.
