IPL Teams qualified for clt20 2011

Submitted by cricinfo
Mon, 6 Jun 2011

The third edition of the Champions League T20 will see at least three teams from the IPL play in the tournament. The three teams from the IPL which have qualified for the CLT20 are the winners of the IPL 2011, Chennai Super Kings, the runner-up Royal Challengers Bangalore and the third placed team in Mumbai Indians.

A fourth side which could qualify to the Champions League cricket from the IPL will be Kolkata Knight Riders, which will depend on whether or not the IPL governing council decide to go ahead with the Champions League T20 qualifier. In case there is a qualifier, one team each from the IPL, Sri Lankan Premier League, West Indian T20 winners and the New Zealand T20 winners, will each fight for two further spots.

The top eight spots will be won in the Champions League T20 by three teams from the IPL 2011 - as mentioned above - two each from South Africa and Australia and one from England. Pakistan has not been invited for the Champions League T20, which is an event in a joint venture between the cricket boards of India, South Africa and Australia. India is the majority stakeholder in the tournament.

The first edition of the Champions League T20 was to take place in 2008 but the Mumbai attacks postponed the event to 2009, which was held in India. New South Wales Blues had won that first tournament. The second edition of the CLT20 was held in South Africa and Chennai Super Kings, who had qualified by the virtue of being winners of the IPL last year, had gone on to win it. They beat Warriors in the final. This is the third season of the CLT20 and will be played, in all probability, in India.

If the tournament is a ten-side one, CLT20 will see the teams divided into two groups of five each with top two from each group proceeding to the semi-finals. The winner of the two CLT20 semi-finals will play in the final for the trophy.
