The Calgary Flames Begin the 2008-2009 Season

The Calgary Flames are back and bigger than ever, in this 2008-09 NHL season. During the off-season, the exciting NHL franchise made several exciting acquisitions. Firstly, the NHL Entry draft saw the Flames acquiring young forward Mike Cammaleri from the Kings, in exchange for a 17th first round draft pick. Meanwhile, in exchange for the Montreal Canadiens’ 25th pick, the Flames traded veteran Left Winger Alex Tanguay. Perhaps the most important news from the Flames’ off-season however, came when former Canuck and Flames rival, Todd Bertuzzi, signed with the team for a one year $1.95 million contract as an unrestricted free agent.

Bertuzzi joins an already intimidating Flames lineup, which includes Daymond Langkow, Mike Cammalleri, Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla among its top stars. Meanwhile, all-star Flames goaltender Miika Kiprusoff is enjoying some of the best play of his career, with a career NHL Goals Against Average of 2.37 and an NHL Save Percentage of 0.915.

With a formidable defensive and offensive presence on the ice, a phenomenal cast of supporting characters, an all-star goaltender and the guidance of head coach Mike Keenan, the Calgary Flames will look to go all the way this season, in their run for the 2009 Stanley Cup. The Flames won their last Stanley cup exactly twenty years ago, in 1989 and will look for a repeat performance this year.
