The Montreal Canadiens Celebrate 100 Years

Submitted by ShowTimeTickets.com
Wed, 17 Dec 2008

The 2008-09 season is a big one for the Montreal Canadiens, as 2009 marks the “original 6” team’s one-hundredth year as a franchise. To acknowledge this milestone, Montreal’s Bell Centre will host the 57th annual NHL All-Star game on January 25 and the 59th Entry Draft in June.

The Canadiens have also made some significant transactions in the 2008-09 off-season. Though the team did not capture Mats Sundin as it had hoped, the Canadiens managed to sign veteran forwards Robert Lang and Alex Tanguay and enforcer George Laraque to lucrative contracts.

Lang, Tanguay and Laraque now join an already impressive Canadiens lineup, which includes Andrei Markov, Saku Koivu and Alex Kovalev. The lineup also includes young goaltender Casey Price in net. The 2008-09 season will mark the Vancouver-born goaltender’s second season as both a Canadien and a professional hockey player. In his rookie year last year, Price recorded a 0.920 Save Percentage and a 2.56 Goals Against Average.

With the 2008-09 season now well underway, the Montreal Canadiens find themselves sitting in one of the top spots in both their division and conference. Last year, the Canadiens made it to the playoffs, but lost in the conference semifinals, to the Philadelphia Flyers. This year’s team will look to go two steps further and bring the Stanley Cup to Montreal for the first time since 1993.
