The Ottawa Senators Start fresh in 2009

The 2008-09 off-season was a very eventful one for the Ottawa Senators. After losing Wade Redden and putting superstar Ray Emery on waivers, the Sens recouped by naming Craig Hartsbug as their new coach and re-signing Chris Kelly to a four-year deal. Ottawa also picked up some key draft picks in the entry draft and signed goaltender Alex Auld to a short-term deal, in order to replace Emery. Other key signings for the Sens included Jarkko Ruutu, Alexandre Picard and Jason Smith, among many others.

With their brand new lineup in place, the Sens kicked off the 2008-09 NHL season in style, playing the Pittsburgh Penguins in Stockholm, Sweden. Each team ended up picking up a win in the two game preseason exhibition series.

While the 2008-09 regular season thus far has been a tough one for the Senators, with a few key wins, they can still remain in the running for a playoff appearance. The Sens have qualified for the playoffs every year since 1995-96 and this year’s team is in no mood to end this impressive streak. It’s apparent this year however, by their performance on the ice, that the 2008-09 team is still getting used to the new roster and working together as a cohesive unit. However, with superstars like Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, Flip Kuba and Alexandre Picard sporting the red and gold, a playoff run in 2009 is certainly achievable.
