Most people get discouraged when using a particular device but you should not stop there try out various devices until you find the most appropriate one for you. The lighting arrangement can be changed to suit your need. Try to avoid glare in your home and office. Several types of special lights are available and you can test them for your needs.

If you are in the habit of reading, go for large print books, which are available in most libraries. While writing, write in large letters and increase the font while reading and writing in computers. Patients in the advanced stage can make use of low vision aids.

Healthy habits can inferior the risk of age-related macular degeneration. If there is a family history of AMD, you should take necessary precautions like consulting an ophthalmologist. As the disease mostly affects adults above 50, they should make periodical visit to the ophthalmologist. Taking nutritional supplements after consulting a doctor can be very helpful for middle-aged people and those with family history of AMD.

While focusing on the dark dot, you should be able to clearly see the lines. If you see any missing lines or if they are blurred or wavy, immediately contact an ophthalmologist. If there is no problem when you watched the grid with both eyes, repeat the exercise by closing one eye at a time. This is because AMD can affect one eye but the other eye makes up for it.

As with all other tools, magnifying lenses come in many sizes, types, shapes and strengths and (as with tools) bigger and stronger isn't always the best choice for the job. Even though there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of different modelson the open market, they can all be categorized in one of the above types and each type has a specific use.

Definitely the most popular, reading magnifiers come in the widest variety of size, shape and strength. The most common, also known as the Sherlock Holmes Magnifier, is the classic handheld round magnifying glass. Do not limit, however, your choice to the old classic style (unless you want to) as now they come with many options and features: Some with light, some have legs, some are attached to a necklace, some can be worn like a hat or visor and some can be attached on your prescription glasses.

Unless you are severely vision impaired, do not choose a 15x or stronger loupe to read the newspaper or your favorite book because, besides the discomfort of having to keep the loupe right under you eye and the reading material one to three inches from your eyes, you'd be able to read only a few letters at a time!

Some vision impaired customers, especially those affected by macular degeneration, tend to prefer units that are between 5x and 10x in strength and that have a light source built-in. Bright light, in their experience, is as important as strong magnification.

Of course, this type of magnifier is also widely used in a variety of applications; to inspect plants, minerals, art and by anyone who just wants to see something larger.

To properly use an eye loupe, one side of the lens must be placed right under one eye and the object to be examined directly under the other side. Do not attempt to use a jewelry loupe like a regular magnifier as you'd get upside down images and plenty of distortion.

The object to be examined must be smaller than the circumference of the lens, to allow light to seep through. Placing printed pages or large objects under the glass would cover the lens and obscure the view.

Eye glasses for macular degeneration are one of the most common and effective solutions for people with macular degeneration and associated vision problems. Central vision, which is vital for ordinary everyday activities such as reading, working at the computer and driving, is what is primarily affected by macular degeneration. Although there is no cure for macular degeneration, those suffering from the vision problems caused by this condition can maximize the vision that they still have with low vision devices such as special magnifiers and other high-tech low vision aids stand magnifiers and eye glasses for macular degeneration is only one of the many options available.

To clarify how these low-vision aids work, it’s helpful to understand what age-related macular degeneration is and how it causes vision problems. The macula is located in the central part of the retina. Over time, macular cells start to die off or deteriorate, or else there is excessive blood vessel growth which causes bleeding underneath the macula.

Modern stand magnifiers come with headbands or clips, to be attached to prescription glasses,
so they can be used for extended periods of time without straining facial muscles. These special magnifiers consist of minature binoculars that are mounted either in front or above eye glasses for macular degeration.
