Mobile phones have come a long way since their first introduction in the late twentieth century. What is probably most striking is the difference in size between mobiles now, and those of decades ago. Indeed, it is comical to view the nearly briefcase sized early models side by side with those of today since the batteries of the former were larger than the whole of the latter. But it is not only size that has changed drastically over the years.

Battery life has greatly improved from mere minutes of talking time in the beginning to several hours today. The area of coverage has also greatly expanded. In the past, one would be confined to a small, usually urban area if they hoped to get any reception at all. Today, it is possible to get mobile phone reception virtually anywhere in the world. The ubiquity of the mobile has also increased exponentially. When they were first introduced to consumers, mobiles were seen as status symbols that only the wealthiest people could afford. As time has passed and technology has increased by leaps and bounds, we have come to the point where mobile phone ownership is practically the standard. Indeed, in some areas of the country, it is more unusual to find a person who does not have a mobile than someone who does. For many, in fact, the mobile has replaced the traditional home telephone entirely.

However, it is in the area of functionality that the mobile phone has changed the most over the years. There was a time when one expected one's mobile to be nothing more than a phone. Slowly, functions were added to new models. At first, these functions may have seemed novel, but many of them soon became standard. For example, the "address book" feature on today's mobiles is absolutely expected. One would be quite surprised to find that the phone they have just purchased lacked this capability, and they would likely return it to the vendor. This is a relatively simple feature that is now taken entirely for granted. People now also expect colour displays, cameras, and internet access as standard elements of even the least expensive mobiles.
