The smart phones are fast replacing the desk top computer or laptops and the conventional mobile phone devices. This trend has set in because the smart phones are much portable than either the desk top computer or the laptops. Besides this the smart phone also serves the purpose of telecommunications.

When the smart phones came into the market there were mainly a limited number of brands like BlackBerry, iPhone and Android. Now the Windows have also followed the suit. Android being open source platform is being used by many mobile phone manufacturers. The main difference between the different brands of smart phones is that the operating systems and the platform vary. This results in a situation in which if a mobile application is designed to work on one brand of smart phone it is not going to work on other brand of smart phone. This implies that if a business wants its application to be displayed on all the smart phones then it has to have applications developed individually for every smart phone brand that is in the market. This has got multiple effects on the developers as well as the business and customers. Some of these effects are as follows.

•When the application has to be developed individually for different brands of smart phone, the chances of earning money for the developer increase. This is because the application will have to be developed for at least three different operating systems and platforms if the business wants to cover most of the smart phone users' market. The application developers get chance to earn more money.

•When the business wants to optimize its revenue generated from the smart phone users' market, his expenses will increase because the application will have to be developed differently for different brands of smart phones.

•If the users of different brands of smart phones can have accesses to your application then as compared to your competitors, you have better chances of being the first one to be contacted by the prospective buyer. If the user cannot access your application on the smart phone that he/she is using, then the business losses a chance to generate revenue.

What is the drastic change?
This change refers to the mobile applications that can be accessed across different platforms. This is going to be introduced by BlackBerry Playbook. This smart phone will not only allow access to BlackBerry applications but also the Android applications. A company named BlueStacks has followed the suit too. It has introduced a novel solution that allows the user to run the Android applications on the Windows desktop platform.

When this sort of change enables access of applications across different platforms, there is no need to create applications for different operating systems. This can lead to reduction in expenses for the businesses as well as easy accessibility for the smart phone users.
