Mobile Phone Demand and the UK EconomySubmitted by Phillip Greene Thu, 23 Jul 2009
The demand for mobile phones has increased vastly over the last few years. As technology has progressed, improvements in mobile phones have been vast. Not only has this, but the production of mobile phones has led to increased jobs and a boost to the UK economy. The industry itself produces £15 billion a year towards government money. With a significant number of people in the UK (around 200,000) dependent on mobile phone technology as basis for their employment, it means developments in the industry are being made right here in the UK.
No doubt today, these numbers are higher. The UK has some of the most sophisticated wireless carriers in the world, and deals have been struck with the likes of AOL, eBay, Microsoft and other companies to make web-surfing on mobiles, such as the Samsung Pixon 12, state of the art. Customers can now search, use web mail, and do just about anything on their mobiles they could do on a standard computer. As a vehicle for communication and commerce the mobile has come into its own. Economic pricing of services too has seen revolution. Still driving the pricing structure is the amount of data downloaded per month, but soon economies of scale will begin driving the way services are priced. Mobile web browsers, some of the fastest on the market, are making downloading a speedy thing, almost as fast as on a PC. From unit pricing, packages may be offered at fixed monthly rates in light of the ability of the phones now to compare directly to PCs, which already support the likes of Flash, Java, and Windows Media. In effect your phone is your handheld PC. As these innovations continue to rock the markets, UK consumers will have the real web on their phones, and the landscape will be soon to change in how the phones are used. Will they take the place of PCs? For some, yes. When that happens the mobile phone industry will increase in effect on the British economy. The new 3G phones are making an incredible impact on the buying public. Phones with music transfer definitely are at the head of the pack, such as the Sony Ericsson W900i, or the Samsung i300. Nokia is soon to release the N91. The industry is incredibly competitive and is only going to get bigger.
