Over the past few years, there has been a lot of growth in the mobile phone industry. In the United States, 75% of people are estimated to have access and use a mobile phone. In parts of the European Union, mobile phone usage rates are at or even slightly above 100%. That means that some people are using more than one mobile phone. The developed world, such as America, Europe, Japan and others, have fully embraced and are using mobile phones in very high numbers.

The growth in the mobile phone industry in these areas over the next few years is not going to be a noticeable increase in mobile phone subscriptions but in the increased services that they provide. Some of those services include: text messaging, e-mail service, music downloads, and internet access on the mobile phone. In some parts of the world though, there is very little usage of mobile phones currently. Some of these areas include: Latin and South America, parts of Asia, Africa, The Middle East and central Asia. Although some of these areas have seen major growth in the past few years, there is still a lot more growth to go in order to even approach the usage rates in the developed world.

Mobile phone providers are quick to notice these trends and these facts. There often is a lower cost to developing technology in the developing world, which can make access easier and profits higher for mobile phone providers. If mobile phone providers can build mobile phone towers and get people signed up for service, they stand to make a lot of money. In addition, with the rise of globalization, the world is getting smaller and that makes it even more important that people are able to reach each other in all parts of the world. This is extra incentive to get mobile phones more accessible to all people. There will be challenges to be able to get the world mobile phone savvy together, such as access to enough power and political will, but with money to be made by mobile phone providers and the desire to get the world connected, there is little doubt that the growth of the mobile phone industry will be strong and powerful in the years to come.
