Most celebrated novel technologies for 2008

Several novel technologies have come forward in the year 2008 where some are innovative over an existing technology, while few are entirely new. The categories for the technological novelty includes cellphones, laptops, videogames, digital cameras, camcorders, LCDs, projectors etc. Here In this feature I am including some technologies that create a hype in the market and consumers. Every new product launch has its own features, some are famous for its functionality, some are famous for low electricity consumption, some are good for their design and some are good for its energy consumption.

Best gadget: Apple 3G iPhone

The best gadget award goes to Apple’s 3G iPhone. It was unleashed in India on 22nd August, 2008. The second launch of iPhone is termed as 3G iPhone. The smartphone is accepted by the consumers due to its unique design, touchscreen interface and other features like 4/8/16 GB shared memory, v2.0 bluetooth connection, 2 MP camera, 1600x1200 pixels screen resolution and weighing just 135 g. The 3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world which makes downloading of heavy files like video and pictures comparative easy. It is not just a phone but includes exclusive features of iPod and internet device. The touchscreen phone promises 5 hours of 3G talktime, 10 hours of 2G talktime, 5 hours of 3G Internet time, 6 hours of Wi-Fi Internet time, 7 hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback, and 12.5 days standby time.

Best Design: Apple MacBook Air

The award for the best design goes to the world's thinnest and lightest notebook-Apple MacBook Air. The notebook was launched in the beginning of 2008 measuring 0.16-0.76 inches; it weighs about 3 pounds (1.36 kg). Air is powered by 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with 4 MB on-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed and uses an 800MHz front side bus with 2GB RAM and 80 GB hard drive. Other than these, it includes Intel’s Core 2 Duo chip, a removable battery and a built-in DVD drive.

MacBook Air's installed with software Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard includes Quick Look, Spaces, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Address Book, DVD Player, Photo Booth, , Xcode Developer Tools etc.

Global brand: Nokia

Everyone is aware about the Global brand, Nokia. It is the world's largest cellphone manufacturer popular for its quality, reliability and functionality. The company is focused on wireless and wired telecommunications, with 112,262 employees in 120 countries. Nokia’s sales in more than 150 countries and global annual revenue of 51.1 billion Euros and operating profit of 8.0 billion as of 2007 and this value has a drastic jump in the year 2008. Nokia produces its product line for every market segment and protocol, including GSM and CDMA. Almost 74% of cell phone market is trapped by Nokia. The company is planning to launch its first touchscreen model codenamed Tube up to the end of this year. The most distinctive feature of the company is that it is launching cellphone that suits to everyone’s budget.

New Technology: Sony Reader

The innovative technology award goes to e-book Reader- PRS-505, that uses an electronic paper display developed by E Ink Corporation that has 170 dpi (Dot per Inch) resolution and eight-level grayscale measuring 175 x 122 x 8 mm and weighs 250 grams. The Reader works with solar light and does not need electrical connection to use. It has a 6-inch SVGA display, and comes with the memory capacity of 256MB with memory slot. Sony Reader comes with Sony's software called Connect. It also supports Windows XP, but does not work on Windows Vista. One exclusive feature depicts that it can hold around 160 eBooks.
