New Aspects About Wind Turbine Towers

Submitted by mahoney01

One of main deciding factor about the efficiency of wind turbines is the height of tower underlying the windmill. In most of cases the greater height of the tower is preferred with a objective to harness the available wind power to maximum extent. Sometimes tower goes up to 65 meters in sky. Consequently there is seen a general trend in favour of high towers these days.

Strong Competition

European manufacturers of the wind turbines are racing against each other in a bid to outshine others in taller design of towers. Among the leading companies in this field are Nordex, Carter, Bonus, Nedwind, Tacke, Vestas, Nordtank WindMaster as well as WindWorld with height ranging to 50 meters. One of the German company namely Vestas has designed wind tower of height 50 meters. Nordtank is a bigger player in field of turbines, which has touched 63 meters mark. Towers reaching out up 49 meters are a common scene in San Gorgonio Pass area of California.

Difference in height

Height of 60 meters is suggested as ideal for a Germany and densely forested areas of Europe . While in case of North America very tall towers are not advised by the experts. However the recommendations of NREL (Non Renewable Energy Laboratory) indicate that efficiency performance of the wind turbine is enhanced 50 per cent in case of tall towers.

Taller is better

On an average the height of the towers mostly is found as 27 to 55 meters. The locations having wind blowing at high level, tall tower is required . However in the low wind areas towers should be kept at normally suggested height. Increase in the efficiency of wind turbine to the extent of 45 % was recorded on doubling the height of the tower structure. In America Minnesota State Public Service Department is working on the project of finding out the ideal height level of tower for maximum power output. Anemometry test trials up to 60 meters are adopted.

Low towers good for Britain

Due to the fact that generally winds do not blow more than 40 meters high, the tall towers for wind turbine are not required for Britain. Experts do not generally suggest high level for the towers in Britain and surrounding regions of Europe. In Wales the government is planning to bring down the levels of towers keeping in view the problems and inconvenience faced by public.
Highly placed wind turbines is causing obstruction to the movement of aircrafts as there is possibility of accidents.

Aesthetic sense compromised at for performance

One of the weak point about the benefits of wind power stations is the impact upon the natural scenery and landscape of a location. The correlated danger of aircrafts mishaps near airport areas necessitate the marking the towers with with bold colours as a caution measure for pilots. However this method as well as the presence of tall towers in the countryside takes away the natural beauty of the place. In addition, the inherent landscape aesthetic of the spot and its background horizon is disrupted badly. This a unavoidable dilemma with the functioning of wind turbines. A considerably perfect balance needs to be set between the aesthetic status of spot as well as the technological needs.
