Online File Hosting, Old Technology in High Demand

Submitted by webmasterwide

Online file hosting has been around since the early days of the Internet. It’s nothing new to upload a file and share a download link with friends and family. Scripts promising to clone popular file sharing sites such as Rapidshare and Megaupload are abundant in variety and usually cost no more than a meal at McDonalds. But why would web entrepreneurs want to create another service already so redundant in the Internet landscape. Well the answer is simple; the demand is high and growing.

There are several reasons for the explosion of online file hosting. First, most internet connections are becoming faster making uploading larger files feasible. Likewise, users in developing countries are also expanding their Internet network access and speeds which in turn enable more opportunity and ability to upload and download files. Second, with the tremendous growth of online video and sites such as Youtube, the amount of media files online are growing rapidly and being widely distributed online. Most media files have trouble being sent through a typical email attachment and thus find its way on an online file hosting website. Finally, the Internet is expanding as a whole and this ever so popular service of hosting files will grow with it.

New services promising larger upload sizes and better organization tools are springing up left and right in hopes of capturing this growing audience base. The profit margins are typically quite low for a file hosting provider due to the enormous bandwidth costs, but with subscription services and well laid out ad formats they can become a lucrative business model.

Filebam.com is a new service which sets out to compete in the free file hosting space. It simplifies the file hosting process and allows anyone to quickly and easily upload and share their files online. Moreover, Filebam offers a set of robust organization and sharing tools which allow for instant posting on Myspace, Facebook, email and social bookmarking websites.

Currently, there are over a handful of file hosting sites which rank in the top hundred websites according to Alexa. This is but an old trend, but interesting to see just what most Internet users are doing online. Between social networking and downloading a file, the latter is more popular. As the Internet continues to grow and bandwidth for consumers becomes cheaper and more readily available it will be clear that this old technology of file hosting will continue to defy odds and grow to new heights.
