Radio And The New World It BeganSubmitted by galaxywd Thu, 5 Jun 2008
It is probably fair to say that no one really had any idea that the invention of radio would spark such a flurry of entertaining technology in our world. The first progress with radio waves began in the 1890’s and progressed from there. It opened the world to a form of communication like never before. People were amazed that they could turn on a box and hear entertainment of all kinds.
The radio was more than just entertainment when the wars of that time were going on. Before the invention of television, it was an informer for what was going on overseas. For the first time in history, regular citizens were able to get reports of exactly what was happening on an almost daily basis. It brought families together in the sitting room to gather around the radio and listen intently for news of destruction and victories. In between the war news there were other forms of entertainment that became available to the household that had never before been thought about either. Families were able to listen to variety and comedy shows. There were dramas to listen to as well. Suddenly there was entertainment for the kids available some where besides outside in the yard. The radio soon became a staple in almost every home and it gave family time a whole new meaning. Even after the television was invented, the radio was still a large part of daily life. During the 1950’s and after, the transistor radio was the best friend of many teenagers of that day. Driving around in a car with their favorite station blasting the latest hit songs was all too common. As the phonograph improved and the home stereo became popular, it was also equipped with a radio in most cases. Then came the eight track and audio cassette player stereos, usually with a radio. It seemed that even though we could play specific music as we wanted to hear it easier than before, we still needed and wanted the radio. Even today when you purchase a stereo system for the home or your car, it will have a radio. The new satellite radio stations have became very popular because they are for the most part commercial free and they still have plenty of good music and variety shows to choose from. The radio just goes to prove that you do not always have to have a picture to enjoy entertainment. About the Author
