Why People Still Listen To RadioSubmitted by galaxywd Thu, 5 Jun 2008
The main reason that for almost a hundred years people have listened to the radio is for entertainment. It has always been free to anyone with a radio to listen to. The newest radio technology, satellite radio, is the first kind to charge for the privilege. Of course, satellite radio does offer a few advantages that can not be had listening to regular tower radio signals. Whichever radio signal you receive, the reasons you listen are still the same, you want to be entertained.
In the early radio days there was music to listen to, but there was also other programming that people loved. Some of the first soap opera shows were broadcast on the radio before television came along. People listened to game shows and dramas and other thrilling shows. The radio was the center of attention in the family sitting room for a long time. When they began to be installed in automobiles, it was a wonderful feature that we took to and soon took for granted when we drove. A car just is not the same, even today, unless it has a radio. After television, radio could still hold its own as a form of necessary entertainment, especially in the automobile. The types of programming changed a little and there were fewer shows like games shows or soap operas, but music and news really became the staple of the programming. This is where some radio broadcasters like Wolf man Jack became famous because of there radio segments. It was an entertaining radio program that played the music people wanted to hear combined with his groovy upbeat personality. There were several of these popular radio hosts during the 1950’s and 60’s. Even now, one of the first places people can hear a new hit song is usually on the radio. There are stations of all varieties available for any musical taste. Some stations play only rock, some, country, and some classical. Some play combinations of old and new. What you listen to is all up to you. There have always been and still are different types of talk shows to listen to over the radio. Howard Stern, if you like his style, has become one of the most popular radio talk show hosts. He is broadcast over satellite radio now, along with others like Martha Stewert. Radio has been around so long and does have something for everyone. It appears that with the new technology that has came about, it will probably been around for years to come. About the Author
