The internet is commonplace. We take it for granted like radio, television and mobile phones. For many younger people alive today it has always been there. Buying, and selling over the internet is often, in fact it is true to say mostly, easier and more convenient than going down town to the local stores. In fact it is difficult to envisage life without the internet. It would certainly be very different for it has truly shrunk the world. Whilst sitting in an office in the UK one can browse a store in Australia and purchase a boomerang should one so wish.

But when did it all begin? There are countless books and articles on the origins of the internet. In fact the story of the internet is now legendary. It all started back in the early sixties with a notion hatched in one man's mind. This man was J.C.R. Licklider and his notion was a Galactic Computer Network. It must have sounded like science fiction back then. Still, he was taken very seriously. He was of course Vice President of his company and it is usually sensible to take what the Vice President thinks fairly seriously. However on this occasion it really was a cracking idea, a true vision of the future. In Licklider's idea he envisioned a vast network in which every person could connect to a huge repository of information and knowledge.

He foresaw that all exchanges of information, all keyboards, in fact all machines capable of collecting data would input to this network. He believed that all forms of communication would happen over this network. He predicted email, virtual meetings and conferences; on-line dictionaries and encyclopedias; shared access to complex computer programmes and the massive sharing of data would all be available through it. He predicted that on-line communities would form between people with shared interests which would cross international boundaries.

Well, Professor Licklider's dream has become a reality. All that he foresaw has materialised. From here the complexity and intelligence of the internet can only increase. How long will it take to ship that boomerang?
