Vehicle Fleets And Tracking Systems

Submitted by mahoney01

Before the invention of GPS, fleet managers were required to trust that their drivers were where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be there. This made hiring reliable drivers a very tedious task that could be very frustrating. Once hired, additional manpower was needed to make spot checks on fleet drivers. The development of the new technologies has changed the way that fleet managers do business. For a business to be successful, they must have mastered an effective form of fleet management. Put simply, whether the fleet consists of taxi’s, ships, or trucks, each vehicle must be locatable at any time. This is where a GPS unit can be a great benefit. GPS units virtually eliminate the trust issue and make any driver accountable.

Almost every type of fleet vehicle today has some sort of GPS vehicle tracking system installed in it. This extends to vehicles ranging from automobiles to seaworthy ships. With the use of a GPS tracking unit, fleet managers are able to watch closely over the daily movements of all of their fleet drivers. Dispatching changes and emergencies can be handled much more efficiently and productively with the use of a GPS unit. Fleet managers often use vehicle tracking systems to track a drivers’ stops, speed, mileage, and fuel usage. GPS units allow for the collection of data that can be used to increase productivity amongst the drivers and with the vehicles, including fuel efficiency. In cases of driver abuse, the data collected can be used to discipline the driver.

A profile can be built on each driver using the data that the GPS tracking systems compile. A good fleet manager must know each of their drivers. However, when there are many drivers, even the best fleet manager will be unable to track every movement of every driver without some help. This is where a good tracking system comes in. Tracking systems can make an accurate log of each driver’s activities throughout the day. For those drivers who abuse the company’s vehicles or time, the knowledge that a tracking system has been placed in their vehicle may be enough to deter future abuses.

As the importance of GPS vehicle trackers has become more publicized, most fleet managers and company owners have mandated that every vehicle in their fleet have them installed. With GPS vehicle trackers installed, dispatchers have the ability to track a drivers’ whereabouts as needed, provide accurate ETA’s for a customer when asked, change a route to accommodate an extra pickup or delivery, make needed changes to a drivers’ route, and do accurate route mapping. Each of these benefits creates a savings for the customer and a profit for the company.

The invention of GPS vehicle trackers was a real boon for fleet managers the world over. Some of the advantages of GPS vehicle trackers are increased productivity, better employee management, better fleet management, waste elimination, more efficient package flow, and overall better business operation. The installation of some of the better tracking systems will also allow a fleet manager or dispatcher to remotely disable a vehicle if it is stolen or if there is some sort of emergency. The more that technology advances, the more sophisticated GPS systems will get. This will mean that more and more companies will install GPS systems in their fleet of vehicles.
