Do you make international telephone calls on a regular basis? If so, it would behoove you to look into a couple other options available today that make international calling a whole lot cheaper.

One of these options is that of VoIP. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that has been developed that uses your high-speed internet connection to make telephone calls. There are several VoIP companies out there now that provide similar services in turning your high-speed internet into a telephone line. These companies offer extremely inexpensive international rates, as well as free local and long distance service, for a reasonable access fee. The voice quality over VoIP is another of its features. In almost every case, VoIP is clearer than standard telephone lines.

The drawback to using VoIP is that if you don't have a high-speed internet connection, you can't use it. With the monthly fee that the service providers charge, it is ordinarily not economical to set up high-speed internet just to be able to make cheaper phone calls.

If the drawback to VoIP prevents you from using it, then perhaps you could consider a phone card. Phone card companies today offer a wide array of rechargeable phone cards, many of which have international rates that are extremely low. Before you buy a phone card to call internationally, though, there are a few things you should think about.

First off, look for a card that has a local access number. These numbers, which should be located in the same area code as you so that it's a local call, save money. The alternative is to call the toll-free number that goes with the card. The reason local access numbers save money as opposed to calling the toll-free number is that the phone card companies charge more for using the toll-free number with their phone card. This extra per-minute charge uses your available minutes, resulting in fewer of the minutes that you paid for to actually talk with.

Another feature of phone cards that can save you money is purchasing a no connection fee card. The no connection fee cards cost a little bit more per minute than the connection fee cards, but it's money well spent. Otherwise, you'll be handing over a large chunk of your available minutes every time you make a phone call with the phone card, yet another use of your minutes that takes away from the time you have to talk.

Something that won't save you money, but should be definitely considered when looking at which phone card to purchase, is whether the card that you are looking at can even be used in the country you will be calling from. Some phone cards are made specifically for certain countries, while others can be used from anywhere. While buying the right phone card for your country won't save you money, it will prevent you from throwing your money away on a card that you can't even use.

Whether you make international telephone calls on a daily basis, or just need to call a family member in another country once, there are options out there that can save you money. With just a little research and hard work, you too could be saving on international telephone calls.
