VoIP security - more and more criticalSubmitted by adm@lost-data-recovery.com Thu, 11 Jun 2009
VoIP security is more and more critical for both companies and those providers delivering VoIP services. Up to now VoIP protection has not been a big problem, since IP voice traffic principally stayed on local enterprise networks. But since VoIP usage is becoming more and more more generally used, this has raised worries over the VoIP security situation.
Furthermore, for all kinds of organizations, it's rather tough for already busy IT staff to ensure that VoIP security policies keep pace with newly discovered hazards to their VoIP network. Yet, in their eagerness to merge the organization's voice and data networks and hence decrease communication bills, many companies are failing to effectively consider VoIP's single drawback: security. VoIP exemplifies a merging of the conventionally separate voice and data networks. The VoIP technology is still new and so far the actual attacks have been marginal. Inspite of this a new sense of need is developing with the threats of wide spread security violation as VoIP technology is gaining popularity. By now, just about everybody is conscious of the necessity for packet data encryption to watch over VoIP traffic. This means controlling the network for suspect activities, as well as upholding the operating system and VoIP programs. To fight back threats on VoIP security systems it is needed to first formulate a way of sending VoIP traffic through firewalls and other central security measures. Until then we are all predisposed to security breaches like denial of service attacks, tapping and loss of information in general. Secure your VoIP platform in the sense that the VoIP traffic should be managed by independent servers with controlled access, even considering putting the VoIP systems out of direct access from the Internet. Additionally the use of VPN-tunneling for the VoIP communication should absolutely be considered. Revise patches on a regular basis - the security of a VoIP network depends on both the main operating systems and the applications that run on it. Spamming of all all sorts has made its way into our daily lives, and VoIP is beyond doubt no exception. VoIP spamming is even seen as more irritating than email spamming. Along with the continuously increasing popularity of VoIP spamming, spammers have found yet another medium to utilize - the VoIP Voicemail - since the technology to put into practice VoIP spamming regrettably is fairly uncomplicated to grasp. With a bit of luck and with a decent focus on safety measures, attacks such as VoIP spamming, call redirection and VoIP interception and fake Caller IDs will decrease before VoIP becomes the actual communication norm. Without hesitation, VoIP communications can be made more secure and trustworthy than regular PSTN interactions provided that the correct security measures are taken within the company.
