Why You Should Consider an LCD HDTV Televisions Over a Plasma SetSubmitted by luisnarvaez582 Tue, 30 Jun 2009
One of the ongoing debates when it comes to HDTV televisions is which are better, Plasma HDTV televisions or LCDs. A debate that has been appearing everywhere including forums, blogs and social media networks. When it comes to market share, LCD HDTVs have the leading edge. Most stores at the moment have reduced to amount of Plasma sets to a minimum and some manufacturers have stopped creating Plasma sets entirely. The true question is should you buy an LCD HDTV of should you buy a Plasma set? Even with the fact that LCD televisions are lower in image quality than Plasma sets when it comes to contrast and the rate at which the screen is refreshed, they are the most popular type of HDTV set that is available on the market today. LCD HDTV televisions are very light compared to other sets. One of the great things about them is that they can easily be mounted on walls. A set that is mounted on a wall takes a lot less space inside a room than a set that is sitting on a table or even in any home theater furniture. They are very energy efficient compared to other types of HDTVs. A Plasma set may require up to triple the amount of electricity than an LCD HDTV of the same size needs to operate. Saving energy to eventually save money has become somehow a norm in many homes due to the ever increasing utility costs which has lead many consumers to prefer devices that consume less energy. Are these the only pros of LCD televisions? Of course not. Like all HDTVs, LCDs have a good image quality. They have intensecolors that opposed to Plasma and CRTs, do not fade away with time making them very durable and reliable.
The what are the cons of LCD HDTVs? One common problem that a lot of these HDTVs have is that refresh rates tend to be slow in some units. Slow refresh rates usually makes scenes fast moving scenes blurry and depending on how fast objects move inside the image, some tracers may be seen. Something that has bothered sports enthusiasts and gamers for quite a few years. Most big brands have invested the money to develop units with higher refresh rates but when it comes to low quality brands, slow refresh rates degrade the image considerably. Sometimes, due to how this technology works some pixels stop functioning and turn in to what is known as stuck pixels. In general, LCD HDTV sets give a good overall performance and do not need as much maintenance as Plasma sets do. For example, you do not have to take procedures to avoid things like burn in and other such nonsenses like having to adjust your set's brightness levels for the first one hundred hours of use like with Plasma televisions.
