Wireless And Satellite The Most Popular Method Of Vehicle Tracking

Submitted by mahoney01

There are many different vehicle tracking systems that have been introduced into the marketplace over the last few years. Of all of them, the most popular is quite obviously the GPS tracking systems. This is due mainly to their ability to provide exact coordinates of a vehicle’s location, in addition to providing the short route to a destination, thus saving in mileage and frustration. Additionally, insurance companies like the ability of some to provide electronic data regarding the travel patterns of that vehicle, patterns like speed, distance, and frequency of travel. Insurance companies use this data to provide discounts to responsible drivers, in particular, teenagers.

Vehicle tracking solutions manufacturers should see an increase in their client base because of a new law that has been passed in Brazil. This increase is expected to generate as many as 500,000 new customers for those companies, an increase of 75% annually over the next five years.

Explanation of the New Law

The crime rate is Brazil is dominated largely by auto theft. Auto theft rates in Brazil are significantly higher than they are in the larger more well developed countries. Of the 52 million vehicles owned by Brazilian citizens, a record fifteen percent of these are stolen each and every day. Unfortunately, authorities are unable to recover more than half of those stolen cars. As a deterrent to auto theft, a new law has been passed in Brazil which requires all new cars to have a vehicle tracking system installed in them at the time of registration. Prior to the existence of this law, there were no more than 10% of all cars in Brazil which had tracking systems installed in them.

An Overview of the System to be Used

The Brazilian government has chosen to utilize the services of a company named Ituran. The wireless tracking systems made by Ituran work by using a satellite vehicle tracking system combined with a land-based receiver. There will be a sensor installed in the car which can send a special signal to a call center if it is indicated that the vehicle is tampered with or stolen. The call center can then use that signal, along with one from a satellite receiver in the vehicle to locate it and get precise coordinates. This information is then turned over to local authorities who should be able to find the vehicle and arrest the criminals. In addition to tracking the stolen car, the call center can remotely disable the engine and turn the car off, making it difficult for the thief to move the vehicle.

The cost of this system is very inexpensive compared to those offered by other manufacturers. Insured and uninsured alike have the option of either purchasing or renting the equipment from Ituran. If they choose to buy the system it will cost them about $400 to $500 and then they will still need to pay the monthly fee of $15 which covers the tracking of their vehicle.

The country of Brazil hosts Ituran’s second largest customer base. The company itself, however is actually based in Israel. Established in 1998, Ituran’s product designers worked to model their product after the tracking systems used by the Israeli Air Force in tracking downed planes and soldiers in enemy lands.

The cost of the Brazil project is expected to exceed $60 million for Ituran. They also hope to, in the near future, expand this project to include other countries who also have high crime rates, including Mexico, Poland, Russia, and South Africa.
