If you’re looking to purchase beds for a commercial environment, then you might already know exactly what you need. Alternatively, if you are launching your own hotel, B&B, or are in charge of purchasing for a University, you might not know what to look for to ensure that you get the most appropriate beds.
1. A commercial bed has to be durable. It becomes a false economy if the bed needs replacing several times a year. Depending on the environment, the bed may have people of completely different shapes and sizes sleeping in it every night, so will need to be robust.
2. The bed will have to be easy to make. The housekeeping staff will not thank you if you choose a fancy design that is not easy to make, and takes longer than a traditional bed. If there are a lot of beds, just a few moments more spent making it can soon add hours to a housekeeper or chambermaid’s duties in a large hotel with a lot of beds.
3. The bed will need to be comfortable. Guests stay for the sleep quality, rather than the fixtures and fittings in most hotels. However, in a luxury hotel the bed will need to equally as luxurious as the fixtures and fittings.
4. The bed will be the focal point of a hotel room, and needs to be welcoming and attractive to look at. In a university type establishment, the bed will need to be functional rather than inviting.
5. It is important that the bed fits in with the room décor. A luxury hotel would look wrong with a basic, but functional bed in it, and a sumptuous designer style bed would be very much out of place in a halls of residence at a university.
6. The bed will need to be appropriate for the type of room or hotel. A king size bed won’t be right in most B&B rooms, whilst a single bed will be lost in a large luxurious penthouse suite.
7. The target audience needs to be considered as well. Student beds are more likely to get damaged and break than B&B beds. Beds in a boutique hotel are less likely to get damaged. This should be considered, so that the budget is spent wisely
8. The beds will need to be compliant to relevant safety standards. This is to protect your guests or residents in the event of fire.
9. Another factor that should be considered is bed linen. You may have found the most amazing designer bed, which will look amazing in your hotel, or an absolute bargain for your university. However, if the bed is an unusual shape, then there might be a problem finding bed linen for it.
10. It is also important to remember your budget. Individually, beds may not seem too expensive, but if you are buying several hundred of them, they soon will do!
The bed is arguably the most important feature in a hotel room. Get it right and your guests will be happy, and will recommend your hotel. Get it wrong and you’ll lose business. Isn’t it time you thought more about your beds?
