Most news relating to the UK airline industry currently is focused on either the proposed expansion at Heathrow or how the recession is affecting airport traffic to and from the US and Europe. According to BAA, overall airline traffic in the UK has fallen by 7.3 percent in May, which is down 5.6 percent in comparison to a year ago - with both Gatwick and Heathrow showing dropping figures. Yet, in the context of the commonwealth, Scotland may have the hardest battle on its hands.

Actually, in regards to the recession and its impact on travel, its affect on Scotland is not all bad - at least, it is certainly not black and white. In fact, according to BAA Edinburgh is the only UK airport to have seen a rise (1.4 percent) in airport traffic during May, but is still not processing as many passengers as it was a year ago with a fall of 2.5 percent. Additionally, Aberdeen and Glasgow reported worse figures, -14.1 and -11.7 respectively during May. Bringing Scotland's average to -6.2.

Another general difficulty for the airline industry at the moment is the Air Passenger Duty. After being double in February 2007, November will see further changes to the tax as the government tries to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 0.3 million tonnes every year. November will see £11 being added to ticket prices for flights up to 2,000 miles, £45 for flights from 2,001 miles to 4,000 miles, £50 for flights from 4,001 miles to 6,000 miles, and £55 for flights over 6,000 miles. These prices are also set to increase again in 2010.

However, a new issue that is more specific to Scotland is proposed to cut air travel by another third. A recent report entitled Rail First has been published by AirportWatch Scotland, a movement opposed to unsustainable airport expansion, which suggests investment in high speed trains will cut air travel from Scotland to England by 33 percent. The report highlights that 60 percent of all flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow serve mainland UK destinations, and that MSPs have applied for Scotland to be the one of the first areas to benefit from fast trains.

Of course, for many customers the short-term consequences of the changing airline industry are likely to be positive. At least where APD remains quite cheap, we are likely to see many passengers benefiting from competitive ticket prices and being able to cut costs or spend their savings elsewhere such as on airport parking, accommodation, and business class flights. However, in the long-term, critics are warning of less choice for customers, and a lack of services to smaller destinations - as well as poorer economic prospects.

--
If you are looking for cheap airport parking at UK airports, please visit Purple Parking at http://www.purpleparking.com/airports/heathrow.htm

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

It is not surprising that the travel industry has been seen to be suffering from the ongoing recession. Since sterling fell mightily in comparison to the euro and the US dollar in December last year, it has done little to gain any ground in the lead up to the summer urging many UK travellers to consider staying home this holiday season. After expansion and monopolization controversy, how is the UK's No. 1 airport coping in the wake of the credit crunch?

As is expected, recent BAA statistics published at abtn.co.uk have shown a general fall in passenger volume through May. Overall airport traffic for the UK fell by 7.3 percent last month whilst the BAA-owned Gatwick airport saw a drop of 6.5 percent. By comparison, one of the worst hit airports during the recession has been London Stansted which has fallen by 18.5 percent - more than twice the national average. The statistics are also interesting In terms of traffic specific to certain areas of the globe; whilst US BAA traffic has fallen by 9.1 percent, it is numbers of European travellers that have fallen the most - 20.5 percent fewer travellers year-on-year

Comparatively, reports have shown that Heathrow is surviving the recession fairly well. Although the volume of passengers didn't increase in May (Edinburgh was the only UK airport that did), in light of current trends the figures have proven better than the UK average. In May, traffic at Heathrow declined by 3.9 percent which is just 2.9 percent less than a year before - and the smallest change of all BAA-owned airports aside from Edinburgh.

However, the decline in May shouldn't be seen to suggest that the summer will see further falls in traffic. April's figures (reported at BAA.com) showed figures rise by 2.6 percent - further support for "demonstrating the resilience and importance of Britain's international hub airport," said BAA.

Such resilience is good news for the airport and for BAA. In light of expansion plans to build a new runway and to build on other facilities such as additional Heathrow airport parking - if the airport continues to show strength in the face of recession whilst others are forced to cut back, the development of Heathrow will no longer be considered desirable, but essential for the welfare of the UK economy.

--
If you are looking for airport parking at Heathrow or another UK airport, visit Purple Parking at http://www.purpleparking.com

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

A Short History of BAA

The British Airports Authority was established in 1966 to manage the government-owned airports at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted. Since then the company has experienced privatization, name changes, acquisitions and growth, and some criticism - but the success of the business cannot be ignored. Here is a short history of the company now known as BAA.

By the 1970s the British Airports Authority had acquired Southampton Airport, Aberdeen Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow International Airport, alongside the big three in and around London. Southampton has since become one of the country's leading regional airports, handling almost 2 million passengers a year.

In 1986, Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Government passed the airports act serving to privatize the authority as a means to raise funds on the stock market. In the process the company became BAA plc. - confusingly, a name in its own right and no longer standing for British Airports Authority. In 2006 the company was taken over by Grupo Ferrovial, a multinational Spanish consortium specializing in transport and construction, and was consequently renamed once more to BAA Ltd. (though it is often known as BAA Airports Ltd.).

Since being taken over by an international company, it is perhaps no surprise that BAA has expanded globally itself. The subsidiary, BAA USA Inc., was established and is now in charge of retail operations at Logan International Airport in Boston and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. In 1994, BAA also won a contract to manage Indianapolis International Airport until 2004. The contract was then extended and cancelled in 2007.

Despite BAA's growth and success, the company has been subject to criticism, even leading to the recent enforcement by the UK Competition Commission to sell some of its airports. Amidst arguments that BAA is in a monopoly position, over the next two years the company will have to sell Gatwick and Stansted and one of either Edinburgh or Glasgow. Recent plans to add a third runway at Heathrow have been met with opposition by MPs and the public alike due to, amongst other things, the increase in air and noise pollution.

In 2007 BAA helped establish Flying Matters, a coalition of airlines, operators, food producers, manufacturers and tourist organisations that aim ‘to contribute to a balanced and informed debate on aviation's contribution to climate change.' With a focus on the economic value of airport growth and expansion, ranging from issues of more planes to airport parking, Flying Matters has recently opposed green "spin" and argued the importance of aviation to farmers in the developing world.

--
If you are looking for heathrow airport parking, visit Purple Parking at http://www.purpleparking.com

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

What does the expansion at Heathrow airport mean to you?

In January of this year, Geoff Hoon announced that the UK government supported the expansion of Heathrow should BAA continue with proposals to build a new runway by 2015. The new plans see the 2200 metre runway being built to the north of the existing airport running parallel and in between the northernmost runway and the M4 motorway. So what does the expansion mean to you?

One of the key arguments in opposition to the plans concerns the increase in pollution as a result of more airline traffic. As is reported in The Guardian, Greenpeace and WWF (along with local councils and a total of seven million individuals) oppose the expansion because it will greatly increase air and noise pollution. Using the government estimation that 210.8 Mt of carbon will be generated due to extra airport traffic, those in opposition believe that the cost to the government will reach in excess of £13 billion - enough to cancel out any economic benefits from the plans. Additionally, an extra runway will subject thousands more residents to noise pollution.

To counter any detrimental effect on the community, the Labour government argues that many jobs will be created with the proposed plans - giving the local community an economic boost. They argue that the construction of the runway will lead to a massive 60,000 jobs being created. In addition to these, after the construction the working of a larger airport will also result in 8,000 permanent opportunities for locals by 2030.

Although the expansion is sure to create jobs for the local community, those against the plans are quick to highlight the negative aspects for the area. Primarily, 700 homes will need to be demolished, as well as a church and some Grade 2 Listed Buildings. Others believe that the destruction will be more severe, with MP John McDonnell claiming that in total 4000 homes will be abandoned or demolished, alongside Harmondsworth High Street being split, a graveyard being ‘bulldozed' and the village of Sipson all but disappearing.

In spite of the impact on the local community, and the oppositions from some MPs and environmental organisations alike, it is no surprise that at this time the economic benefits seem very worthwhile. Heathrow is arguably the best located airport in the country, with excellent Heathrow airport parking, local accommodation and connections to London and the south. Without expansion at Heathrow, many argue that the UK is likely to "fall behind" the rest of the world in terms of economic growth - simply due to the notion that European and international investors will be less willing to establish themselves in London if there is better connectivity elsewhere. And as the decline in the UK economy worsens I wouldn't be surprised if we see an increase in supporters for Runway 3.

--
If you are looking for airport parking, visit Purple Parking at http://www.purpleparking.com/airports/heathrow.htm

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

May has seen some of the most vocal behaviour from both sides of the Heathrow expansion fence since the government agreed to support the plans in January. The debate became heated during a month in which UK airport travel figures reported a significant fall in numbers, averaging 7.3 percent across the country and a 3.9 percent fall for Heathrow itself. But does the recession look to halt any of BAA's plans?

On Saturday 16th May Heathrow was subjected to a "Euro Flashmob" in which expansion protestors arrived at the airport adorned in fancy dress singing popular Eurovision hits, such as Just a Little Bit by Gina G and Congratulations by Cliff Richard. With the protest tied in with the Eurovision Song Contest, the flash mob was orchestrated by the HACAN group via the website euroflashmob.eu.

However, later in the month also saw a considerable backlash against these protests from numerous significant companies and businesses in the UK press (telegraph.co.uk). BT, Diageo and Tate & Lyle all stated their support of the expansion and new runway. Paul Walsh, from Diageo, said: "A third runway at Heathrow is essential for UK competitiveness, particularly as we strive to meet the challenge and opportunity of the emerging economies of Africa, Asia and Latin America."

The statement was an intriguing response to the Euro Flashmob. John Stewart, chairman of HACAN, admitted:"This was a fun event with a serious purpose. It showed that the opposition to a third runway will just not go away. But it also showed just how much opposition there is to the growth of airports across Europe. European campaigners gave ‘nul point' to airport expansion."

Despite the opposition to the expansion from Europe, as well as the refusal for certain supporters to admit the difficulties presented by ongoing Euro-wide protests, Heathrow's proven resilience and reputation as the UK air travel hub (as well as boasting other first class facilities such as Heathrow airport parking) during the recession will be nothing but positive. Most other airports (other than Edinburgh) have seen more traffic declines, with Stansted in particular having to cut back on spend and investment making expansion at Heathrow even more essential.

--
If you are looking for cheap airport parking, visit Purple Parking at http://www.purpleparking.com/airports/heathrow.htm

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

With the advent of online flight reservation, flights booking in India increased dramatically, acting like catalyst in a market dominated by the state-owned carrier, Indian Airlines (now Indian). With the repealing of the Air Corporations Act of 1953, Jet Airways showed the way, gaining scheduled airline status in January 1994. This opened the door for a new breed of domestic airlines, such as Air Sahara, and many others. Online flight reservation - with its wide-reaching connectivity, speed, as well as reliability - enabled airlines and ticketing agents to better communicate, and connected the consumer directly with the airline. This allowed airlines to correctly assess the burgeoning demand for domestic air-travel, resulting in the offering a larger number of flights across more destinations in India, for both business and leisure travelers. Ticketing-booking and management software such as Abacus, and international organisations like International Air Transport Association (IATA), further accelerated the process, providing quick, direct and reliable booking of flight tickets across an array of airlines in the world.

At present, there are over 11 major domestic airlines in India, together providing a vast network of flights across hundreds of destinations in India at economical rates. These include full service airlines such as Air India (India's national flag carrier), Indian (India's domestic flag carrier), Jet Airways (market leader), Kingfisher Airlines (UB owned airlines), Jagson Airlines (Pioneer of Air Taxi operations), MDLR Airlines (quality regional air service) and Alliance Air (state-owned), as well as cheap airlines like Air Deccan (India's first low-cost carrier), GoAir, IndiGo Airlines, JetLite (Jet Airways owned subsidiary), Spicejet Airlines, and Kingfisher Red (low cost subsidiary of Kingfisher Airlines).

India's first low-cost carrier was Simplifly Deccan or Air Deccan, and is now known as Kingfisher Red. Air Deccan was formed in 2003, successfully capturing a hitherto untapped segment of the market, offering airfares that were level with railway prices. Air Deccan did all this with the vision to empower the Indian traveller, offering him the opportunity to fly at the lowest airfares to a large number of destinations across the country. Air Deccan showed the way for all low-cost carriers to come, such as the immensely successful Spicejet airlines, GoAir IndiGo Airlines, and JetLite. Air Deccan has recently been taken over by the UB Group, and in its new avatar as Kingfisher Red is based out of Bangalore International Airport, along with a secondary hub at Chennai International Airport.

Now you can book flights for all the Indian airlines like Air India, KingFisher, GoIndigo and Paramount Airways online.

--
Abhishek Sinha

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

We fly where the winds take us! Homework! An Asheville hot air balloon pilot must spend a lot of time reviewing current and forecast winds and weather. The study of surface analysis charts, wind surface charts and constant pressure charts helps us develop a complete weather picture. Taking that weather picture in our mind and applying it to an array of different topographical maps sheds light on how winds might behave in and around the mountains. All of this information accompanies us to the launch site the morning of the flight. From the launch site we release two sometimes three helium balloons in one minute intervals and observe the angle of departure and any changes in direction.

We also time these helium balloons knowing the balloons are ascending at three hundred feet per minute that in three minutes time the observed balloon is at nine hundred feet above ground level. We then note the elapsed time of an observed direction change and know to fly to that altitude and maintain level flight for as long as we want to continue in that direction. Field observations are generally supporting an already held belief of what is going on in the atmosphere that morning. Supporting our day to day research of weather conditions are understandings of the characteristics of wind and mountain.

As you might imagine the relationship of wind and mountain create an interesting number of wind flow characteristics. Winds pertaining to or affected by mountains are referred to as orographic winds. Asheville hot air balloons and ballooning are a different from flatter parts of the country in that the wind characteristics in and above the valleys offer us steerage opportunities that may not exist in flatter terrains. These steerage opportunities are most welcomed as we navigate congested terrain in search of favorable landing options.

What are these wind flow characteristics you may wonder? Mountains will act as shield's changing the direction and speed of approaching winds. We'll use these mountain shields to gain favorable direction below the ridge line. When we're ready for a push down or across the valley in a slightly different direction we'll ascend above the ridge line to pick up faster moving winds traveling in a different direction. Often we'll experience venturi winds as well.

Venturi winds occur when wind is forced between two objects like buildings or a cut away portion of a ridge. These cut aways are generally to make way for an interstate. Another great example of where you will find venturi winds is in a gorge or a canyon. Venturi winds are almost always, from day to day, traveling in the same direction. On a regular basis we'll descend into a venturi wind and let that current of wind push our direction laterally for a couple of minutes we then simply ascend out of it and resume our original heading! As you gain experience flying in the mountains and develop sensitivity to where venturi wind currents are and you learn to use them to your advantage you can really steer one of those Asheville hot air balloons! But wait there are more ways than just wind to steer a balloon.

Sometimes we use the tree tops to get a little pull in a new direction. It's simple really; just reach out grab some leaves and pull and you'll get a little change in direction. Trees change the flow of winds and correctly anticipating wind current characteristics at tree top level will help you that much more in your pursuit of a nice big field to land in. Asheville hot air balloons take advantage of all of mother natures gifts.

--
Addison Brown is an FAA licensed LTA Commercial Pilot and operates Asheville Hot Air Balloons focusing on hot air ballooning in Asheville, NC.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Airbus

The first twin engine wide body Airbus A300 with a seating capacity of 250 seats was introduced in the year 1974. Airbus was designed using advanced technologies. To begin with Airbus used two RB207 Rolls Royce engines. The diameter of airbus A300 was 5.64 meters and could accommodate 6 seats each row in First class, 7 seats each row in Business class and 8 seats each row in Economy class. The first Airbus also could carry 20 containers of cargo. The first flight of Airbus was achieved on 23rd May 1974 and the first Airbus route was between Paris and London. In the beginning the Airbus could fly only 2970 Km. the later designs increased it to 4825 Km and the seating capacity also increased to 270 seats.

Today, Airbus is considered as one the most popular aircraft among passenger jets. You can easily find a comfortable seat for yourself in an Airbus. There are excellent seats available in Economy class; you can secure one provided you know where they are located in the Airbus. Seats in Economy class behind the partition will have more legroom. These seats will also provide you more privacy because it is only the partition in front of you. Only inconvenience in these seats is that the tray table is positioned in the armrest. The seats near the emergency exit will also have more legroom. But if you have children it will not be suitable for you because children under 15 are not permitted to sit near the exit because of safety reasons. The first few seats in the Economy class will also have more legroom but here again the inconvenience is that you can get only small overhead storage space.

There are plenty of aisle and window seats available in an Airbus. If you like to sit in a window seat do not select your seat near the emergency exit because windows near emergency exit are not centered. There are five bath rooms available in a large Airbus. One bath room is positioned between First class and Economy class, two bath rooms are provided in the middle of Economy class and two other bath rooms are situated at the back.

Airbus also designed various types of planes. A 300-600 is a version of airbus which can be easily converted as either cargo plane or passenger plane. A300-600F is a popular version which is specially designed to carry only cargo and not passengers. To facilitate loading the cargo fast this Airbus is designed to have two doors. The abilities of European manufacturers were proved to the world by their first project of Airbus A300. Today Airbus manufacturing company is the best selling company in the world. A single flight in an Airbus and you will know why are they so world famous.

Linus Orakles

http//www.authorclub.info

--
Authorclub is a one stop shop for articles and web content
http//www.authorclub.info

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Not everybody who has lost the chance of cheap flights to Singapore as yet. Majority of airliners have successfully try to stabilize the financial market, and started seeing some stabilization on civil aviation. Even now losses come despite recent move but in lesser intensity.

Basically, the start of the global recession has battered a number of airliners, which has risen airfares invariably. And dealers selling air ticket to Singapore started put up for sale tickets at a premium. As a result, this has battered the travelers' influx lowering down slightly - but lower than had been expected.

The civil aviation market is terrible. It's as bad as we have seen in our lifetime. You may see some stability in domestic demand and some demand overseas also.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) represents more than 200 airlines world wide. Most of the airlines to Singapore are still trying to fly fewer flights helping you to save costs even during the global economic depression.

While a great many leading airliners are mulling over mergers also to build size. This move will help save themselves against ongoing market weakness till the time the global economy recovers.

To cap your travel cost, deal in airfares with the great many merchants available in the money market. There is a vast money market well ahead for you in this regard. Pile up some quotes for your usage. Bring together as much information you can.

Far along, you will have you a ballpark figure. With the help, you would be able to pick out the best possible one. Though this takes a good amount of your time yet delivers the goods with putting a number of options before. And finally you plug the piles up of your travel costs.

Bookings are available both online and offline. Of them, online booking machine comes with the greater convenience than you expect. A simple application is sent in by putting all the pertinent information in the space provided. Your application is due verified followed by a confirmation later in this effect. This marks that your booking is confirmed. After that, travelers are issued tickets, which, finally, allow them to travel on flights to Singapore. Your booking comes to a close.

Regardless the global economic downturn, some airlines to Singapore take all stakes to make regular flights available for some key sectors. The move will continue to stay true to its strategy and goes on setting new benchmark.
