Celebrate Christmas in the City - Smoky Mountains Style

The closer it gets, the greater your sense of excitement. That's because, regardless of your age, Christmas holds an abundance of fun and enjoyment in the Smoky Mountains as well as in nearby towns. Take Knoxville, for instance. Just a 35 - 45 minute drive from Pigeon Forge, this bustling town hosts the enormously popular Christmas in the City festival each year.

This short drive is a delightful addition to any Smoky Mountains getaway. You'll find all the traditional Christmas highlights that make the season memorable. And, because it starts in November, you have plenty of time to explore Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville plus take day trips to the city of Knoxville.

What's in Knoxville?

A complete Christmas village! The official kickoff is November 28th. At that time, Knoxville transforms itself into a gorgeous Christmas playground ole Saint Nick himself would be proud of. Just imagine, carolers wandering the streets, marshmallows roasting over a flickering flame and Christmas bargains found on every corner.

It all starts with the lighting of the 38-foot-tall town tree and Krutch Park that glitters with over 100,000 bulbs. Free carriage rides usher you around town to take in all the amazing sights. Decorate Christmas cookies with Mrs. Claus, get your picture taken with Santa and warm up with hot chocolate… it's all FREE. But the holiday spirit doesn't stop there.

Make your way to Knoxville's only open-air ice rink. There's just something special about ice skating outdoors. (Especially if you don't have to wait for the pond to freeze over!) Pull your cap over your ears, lace up your skates and hit the ice for a family adventure everyone will enjoy.

No celebration would be complete without music so stick around for bluegrass performances, clogging and more. And that's just one day!

Two Months Full of Christmas Joy

Throughout November and December, you can find more Christmas-related fun than you can shake a stick at. The Fine Craft Fair takes place November 14-16 with 150 artisans displaying their wares and providing hands-on demonstrations of their crafts. Woodworking, sculpture, stained glass, jewelry and more will be available for purchase.

A Fantasy of Trees is held November 26-30. Wander through a forest of over 300 beautifully adorned Christmas trees. Then take in the professionally decorated mantels, rooms and doors that will fill you with ideas for your own home.

Before you head back to the Smokies, hop a ride on The Christmas Express on the Three Rivers Rambler. Truly unique to Knoxville, this train ride is like no other. Kids of all ages will enjoy the journey via rail as "The Christmas Lantern" is read. Christmas cookies and other refreshments are served and there's even time to visit with Santa along the way. These rides always sell out fast so make your reservation soon and don't forget your camera!

This season, get the best of both worlds when you celebrate Christmas in the City and the mountains. Book your winter vacation in the Smokies and you'll also get ready access to Knoxville and other wonderful towns that are just minutes away.
