When traveling to the Smoky Mountains, most people immediately think about Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. But there are many surrounding areas that offer exciting and entertaining things to do as well. One such place is Knoxville, TN. In under an hour, you can drive from Gatlinburg to Knoxville for a daytrip to Market Square. In a beautiful setting in the heart of downtown Knoxville, you can stroll among the umbrellas up and down the streets. You'll find food vendors, arts, crafts and a host of other interesting wares street side for your enjoyment. Farmers' Market If you visit between April and November, you can take in the Farmer's Market every Wednesday and Saturday. The freshest produce is made available to the public by local farmers who pick it and rush it to Market Square. You'll find every locally grown fruit and vegetable imaginable including crisp green beans, sweet corn, juicy melons, delicious apples, hearty lima and butter beans, vine-ripened tomatoes and so much more. Whether you just want a healthy snack or you're planning to cook dinner for the family, there's no better place to pick up homegrown produce than Market Square. First Friday The first Friday of every month always brings something special to Market Square. Whether it's an art exhibition, street performances, food and drink specials or sales; First Fridays promise to be interesting and entertaining. Movies with Free Parking Fandango theatres are located in Market Square. Catch all the latest blockbusters at this state-of-the-art facility. Of course, a concession stand is available so you can munch on all your favorite movie snacks. Do dinner and a show or shop all day then relax with a movie. When you present your ticket stub, your parking is free at either the Market Square Garage or State Street Garage. Food & Drink With one of the best selections of restaurants and taverns in the area, the Market Square District promises to fill you with some of the best culinary delights you've ever had. Locally owned pizzerias make truly distinctive pies plus you'll also find homemade soups and breads, authentic sushi, unique pasta dishes, and an American grill featuring burgers, chicken, seafood and steaks. Looking for something on the lighter side? Several sandwich shops can fix you up! Year Round Events There's always something happening in Market Square. Spring brings Sundown in the City and the Farmers' Market. Summer ushers in Shakespeare on the Square. Fall kicks off football season and winter offers ice skating in Market Square. Any time of year is perfect for a visit to downtown Knoxville. When you book your stay in the Smokies, be sure to include time for a daytrip to Knoxville.
