A brief guide to Cambridge

The city of Cambridge is a university town in the centre of the county of Cambridgeshire, England, it is around 50 miles north-east of London and is also home to a high technology centre known as Silicon Fen. The town has a population of 108,863 which includes 22,153 students according to the 2001 census, meaning there is great demand for students to rent property in Cambridge.
Cambridge is one of East Anglia’s major settlements among Norwich, Peterborough and Ipswich. The city has steadily expanded over the years with new large council estates having been made to try and contain the overspill from London.
The city is probably best known for its University, the University of Cambridge, which includes Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University Library and King’s College Chapel. The University was joined by Anglia Ruskin University, and this high reputation for education has meant that many other bodies including the open university has based themselves in the city.
The area is known for its high tech businesses that have started up in the science parks and developments around the city. These companies include CST and Sinclair computers, this is where the Silicon Fen name comes from.
Cambridge is renowned for having a congested road network due to rapid growth in the area. The A14 is one of the most congested parts around Cambridge. To help reduce congestion, Cambridge has a ring road that circles the city, within the ring road traffic restriction apply, that are to help conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
The city has a main station for rail at Cambridge railway station that provides direct links to London and access to the rest of the country. Cambridge city airport unfortunately doesn’t run scheduled flights, so residents need to fly from nearby Luton and Stansted which aren’t too far away.
Cambridge has a whole host of places to visit, with many of the colleges in the area open to look around. Other attractions include the Cambridge leisure centre complex. This centre is at the edge of the city, close to the train station and offers a wide range of things to do. The centre is home to lots of shops and restaurants and also has a large bowling alley and multiplex cinema.
The city has lots of museums covering different areas for you to look around, these include the Whipple museum of history of science and the museum of classical archaeology.
Music buffs will also be pleased to know that Pink Floyd was formed in Cambridge, with Syd Barrett and Roger Walters going to school together at Cambridge high school for boys. David Gilmour also was a resident of Cambridge and went to a nearby school. Lead singer of Muse, Matt Bellamy was also born in the city.
