About the Dublin Gay PrideSubmitted by martinrai Tue, 7 Jul 2009
From the minute of flagging off the festival until the day of the parade, Dublin's Gay Pride has a lot to offer to people of varied tastes and age groups, when it comes to events and performances. Club nights, sports day, workshops, remembrance ceremonies, community street festivals, etc. are just some of the varied events that take place at the Dublin Gay Pride. Quite recently arts and cultural events were given more importance with a Pride Short Film Competition, a literary and poetry night and an exclusive art exhibition. Queer Notions has also been introduced into the listings, which was put together by thisispopbaby, which celebrates queer ideas and performances originating not just from Ireland but also from several other influential nations.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the Dublin Gay Pride is the pride parade, which usually takes place during the last weekend of June. Thousands of people are expected to witness the parade and the show which is held outdoors at the amphitheatre belonging to the civic offices. Year after year, more and more people are beginning to visit the parade, which is definitely as sign that motivates the organizers each year. The aim of the event is quite clear. It is to provide the gay and lesbian community an equal right in the society and to eliminate any grudges arising from the protestors of the community. They are also working on increasing the visibility of the lesbian and gay community in Dublin and to earn them a respect from the society. The recent version of Dublin Gay Pride was named ‘Pride and Prejudice'. It focused on the illegality of same sex marriages in Ireland and tried to overcome any resistance from the general public, which in most cases cannot be avoided completely. In accordance to the recent Civil Bill, same sex couples can register themselves and receive the same protection as the one received by married couples. However, it prevents the couples from marrying and obtaining equal privileges including pension rights, equality under tax codes and right to succession. There have been no limitations when it comes to media exposure to cover the Dublin Gay Pride. Almost all major national agencies display articles regarding the parade and festival, which generates tons of interest and awareness amongst people all over the country. As the success of the parade increased, more efforts have been made to utilize the media even more in order to get the maximum response from the public.
