The mid nineties saw an influx of artists into the eastern part of Berlin. The derelict (and cheap) space left after the Berlin’s wall fall was perfect for a new art scene to grow: many new art galleries found their location in old shop and storage premises. The district of Mitte and the neighborhood started to host writers, poets, artists and musicians. The area turned soon into an internationally renowned arts district. Many new art galleries do not charge any entrance fees so that you can built your own free art tour. The most important art street is Auguststrasse, a vibrant line with many terraced cafes and galleries. The sheer number has meant that the street has been renamed East Berlin’s Art Mile.
Come to Berlin and discover Auguststrasse, you will enjoy a great Berlin experience. Here is a list of three interesting free entrance art galleries, some of Mitte’s best-kept secrets that won’t deplate event the most frugal travel budget. Arndt & Partner This gallery was founded in 2002 and has not stopped to showcase interesting artists such as Hiroshi Sugito, Sophie Calle and Fabrice Hybert, among a growing global roster of artists. Sophie Calle’s exhibition (on March) has explored her own life as a journey foretold to her through a fortuneteller. This journey has been depicted by the artist through photography, text and video art. Arndt & Partner – location: Auguststrasse 35, 10119 Berlin Mitte. Opening times: Tue-Fri 14:00-19:00, Sat 11:00-17:00. Entrance: Free. DNA If you appreciate the contemporary art, don’t miss the DNA gallery. This gallery was founded in 2001 and it is dedicated to the work of Berlin based artists. The object of the gallery is to provide space for contemporary art and the related debate. Different new media are exhibited, such as street installations and graphic works (see Takafumi hara exhibition). DNA curators are in connection with other institutions and exhibitions outside Germany, to realize good artistic partnerships. Auguststrasse 20, 10119 Berlin- Mitte. Opening times: Tue to Fri 11:00-18:00. The entrance is Free. Galerie Rosella Junck Few doors down from the DNA gallery is another important one, the Galerie Rosella Junck. Floor to ceiling windows give the passer by a striking impression of the piece of art that are exhibited within. Recently Jens Gussek, a prolific German artist who has exhibited all over the world and worked in a big number of cultural organization, has showcased at Galerie Rosella Junck. The entrance is free.
