Cornwall's Eighth Wonder of the World

Submitted by artavia.seo

Cornwall is home to what has been dubbed by some as the ‘eighth wonder of the world' and features the world's largest greenhouse. What is this wonder I am talking of? It is of course the amazing Eden Project.

The Eden Project has amassed a worldwide reputation, not only for its stunning architecture but also for its primary purpose of education and displaying a wide range of amazing plant life from all four corners of the earth. Built in a disused quarry the size of 30 football pitches the giant biomes have been built to house two distinct worlds, the Rainforest and Mediterranean while an outdoor biome plays host to plant from a temperate climate.

Entering the Rainforest Biome is like taking a step in to a tropical jungle, allowing you to see trees and plants that are usual only seen by intrepid adventures. Walk in the tree-tops with the "jungle canopy" and get a view of the jungle below which only monkeys and birds get to see. As you would expect there are some truly remarkable plants to see including one which smells or decaying flesh and a plant that grows an amazing meter a day. You can also discover where some of our favourite food stuffs such as chocolate and sugar come from. You can also learn just home important the jungle is to us and how it could well hold the key to the future of our foods and medicines.

Eden's Mediterranean Biome takes you on a relaxed trip around the med and other warm temperate regions of the world. Your journey will begin in the beautiful and colourful Mediterranean before heading all the way across the equator to South Africa then heading off to sunny California. Although warm temperate climates only take up 2% of the world land surface they contain an incredible 20% of its plant life. Though each region has a similar climate the plants are very different and as your walk around this Biome you will come across a whole host of trees and plants including Citrus, olive, herbs, vines, poppies and vegetables. As you make your way round you can learn more about the famous Mediterranean diet, how perfumers use plants to create your favourite fragrance and how olive oil is made.

Although Eden is famous for its Biomes its well worth a trip out side to see the beautiful gardens, in fact ¾ of all the planting carried out at Eden takes place outside of the Biomes.

The Core is home to the Eden Projects education centre and is a stunning hub of events, exhibitions and learning. The center is a great place for people to play, learn and have fun what ever your age.
