Dresden historical heritage

Dresden is the Saxon capital and probably one of most beautiful German cities. Formerly known as "Elbflorenz" (Florence of the Elbe), it was famous all around Europe for its magnificent architecture and artistic treasures. Unfortunately, things have changed in the end of the Second World War when on night of February 13th, 1945 the USA and British bombings fell upon the city and by morning there were only memories left from this legendary place.
Nowadays, there is a huge reconstruction being carried out in Dresden, thanks to which it became an attractive tourist centre again. There are lots of churches and palaces as well as world-level museums here. But, wherever you go, you will encounter the reminiscence of Anglo-American bombings which destroyed almost three fourth of the old city.
Still, Dresden is one of the largest European cultural cities, which boasts priceless treasures that are kept in its museums. The city has a truly secular culture and offers numerous attractions.
One of the main old city’s attractions is the Theatre Square with famous Opera House (built in 1838-1841) located on it. In 1985, restoration works were finished and the theatre was opened.
The hugest Saxon court Catholic church is located opposite the Opera House. Built in 1738-1755, according to the Vatican’s decision the church has become a cathedral in 1980.
A castle built during the August times is located in the eastern part of the square. The new construction was erected on the place where the old castle was situated, which burnt in 1701. Nowadays there are restoration works carried out here as well.
Frauenkirche can be found on the Neumarkt square. Built in 1726-1743, it was one of the largest Protestant churches in Germany. However, it was destroyed during the bombings and for almost 50 years, its ruins reminded citizens of the war horrors. These days, there are reconstruction works being carried out here, mostly thanks to donations. Almost third part of the former laying was reconstructed out of the original fragments.
Another building, which has already been restored, is Hofkirche – the largest Saxon church with 38 Biblical and historical Baroque-style images depicted on its façade.
Zwinger is the impressive Baroque masterpiece. There are numerous museums located in this palace complex, most famous of which is the Dresden picture gallery. The museum is considered to be one of the best in the world and comprises such masterpieces as the Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna” or Giorgione's “Sleeping Venus”. You can also see many famous works by such artists as Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Correggio, Dürer, Vermer and Rembrandt.
And, finally, when you come to Dresden, you should definitely pay some attention to its suburbs as representatives of the ruling Saxon dynasty were really lavish when building their country residences. Dresden has lots of different stories, which can be discovered while walking around its Old City streets.
If you want to see it all with your own eyes, visit Dresden hotels to book a room in Dresden hotel first.
