There is five islands that people actually live on and another fifty areas that people that live there would call islands with hundreds more rocks that surface at low tide. These rocks have caused many shipwrecks over the years but are a beautiful extension to islands. The islands are filled with hundreds of different kinds of colourful flowers that grow wild and some that have been planted and help attract a huge amount of stunning birds and butterflies.

Walkers can enjoy almost fifty miles of routes and trails that includes walks on the larger islands of St Mary’s, Gugh, St Agnes, Samson, Bryher, Tresco and St Martin’s, and boats can be hired to trek to the smaller islands for exploring. Whether you want to enjoy the nature trails or hike along the coast, there is definitely something for everyone, most of which are all easy, low-level walks. Don’t miss out on the Carreg Dhu community garden situated near Longstone Terrace in the centre of St. Mary's. It is easily reached from either Hugh Town or Old Town. Carreg Dhu, has been formed, on several levels, from an old disused ram pit quarry.
