Gay Pride Events

Submitted by martinrai
Wed, 3 Jun 2009

The Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender together form the LGBT community. They organize Gay pride parades and events glorifying their rights. These types of Gay Pride events also demand legislation to approve of Gay marriages. Sometime Gay Pride events are instrumental in bringing about a change in the outlook of people who still don't accept the Gay culture. Most of the Gay Pride events occur to mark the occasion of Stonewall riots. This happened on the twenty eight of June 1969 after the police barged in to a bar exclusive for gay people and frequented by "drag queens". After the riots, it became apparent that a new movement has started wherein the gay people started resisting the anger of the policemen. Though a lot of Gay Pride events are held throughout the year, it is usually near June that the main Gay Pride parades and events are held.

On twenty eight of June in 1970, the liberation front for the gay people marched in New York to the Central park. This was followed in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The first ever of the famous Chicago Gay Pride parade was organized a day earlier.

After the 1980's, there was a great shift in mentality of the people towards the gay movement and hence the words "Liberation" and "Freedom" was dropped off from it. Instead, it began to be known as the Gay Pride Marches. Today, in less accepting cities these Gay Pride events retain the political liberation mood of the original marches. In more accepting cities, the parade becomes extremely colorful and festive. Local people along with the relatives of those participating throng the streets to watch the floats with amplified music with multitude of dancers. Considering the number of voters in gay community recent Gay Pride events are marked by the presence of politicians and other local sponsors.

Some parades offer condolences to the members of the Gay Pride community who were victims to AIDS and the widespread violence towards the LGBT community. Gay Pride parades have become world wide phenomena with even conservative countries accepting this as a part of their culture. It looks more like a carnival with music shows, sports, barbeque, pizza places and athletic events. The number of people participating in such Gay Pride parades and Gay Pride events vary from an astounding 3million people in São Paulo to a small gathering of a hundred in Ireland.
