Ibiza: Better than it's image

Ibiza is located just of the Spanish coast in the warm Mediterranean Sea. Over the past 20 years or so, the island has become most well-known for its nightlife - catering primarily for northern European clubbers who seek free and wild party time in the sun. However, in recent years the Spanish tourist board have strived to rid the island of its reputation for sex and alcohol, and has instead aimed to promote an improving family-friendly destination of good clean sun holidays.

So can this feat be achieved? The islands primary club spots are its capital: Ibiza Town, and Sant Antoni located in the west, and although they are still primary destinations for clubbers, new regulations such as enforced closure of clubs by 6:00 am are beginning to ensure that loud repetitive beats at least don't last throughout the night. Additionally, in order to appeal to the more upmarket traveller, every new hotel built on the island must be five star rated.

The northern region of Sant Joan de Labritja is the most remote area on the island, but subsequently boasts two fine holiday resorts at Portinatx and Cala de Sant Vicent. The area is significantly greener than the south, and is home to handful of safe and friendly beaches with crystal clear waters. A bus service serves the area during the summer months, and it is just 40 minutes drive from the island airport.

Ibiza's abundant beaches and clean waters make the island a diver's paradise. The island boasts 200 kilometres of shorelines - and scuba diving and snorkelling are popular tourist pastimes alongside its many clubs. The west of the island, near Cala Bassa and Cala Corral, are particularly well known - with many diving schools giving lessons to people of all ages and all abilities around the offshore islands of Illa des Bosc and Illa de sa Conillera.

Despite the rapid development of certain areas of the island, particularly around Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni, Ibiza is also home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Benirra's Bay lies 27 kilometres north of the island's capital and boasts a picturesque sandy cove encircled by pine trees and rolling hills. God's Finger refers to the monolithic rock island in the bay - which is best experienced at sunset.
