Kos is green, clean and well-developed

Kos is the third largest island in the Greek Dodecanese, found in the Aegean Sea. With the population of about 30.000, the island lies 4 km from the Turkish Bodrum city. It is famous for its sandy beaches and secluded villages, which played their part in the development of tourism on the island. The island’s main settlements are: Kardamena, Kefalos, Tigaki, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari and Pyli, surrounded with fruit gardens, green hills and tourist centers with beautiful beaches. Farming is the main occupation for many people living here: they cultivate wheat, maize, vine, almond-trees, date-palms, olives and tomatoes. Anyone can feel the provincial atmosphere of the island, but despite this, the level of service and local hotels can compare well with the highest demands that a European traveler has.
The island’s main port has the same name as the island itself. It is also the island’s administrative, cultural and tourist centre, with hotels, restaurants and some nightclubs occupying its snow-white buildings. Even though during the last years suburban areas have been growing rapidly, Kos still has the wonderful cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are many bars and restaurants here – from English-style cafes to local taverns, many of which are located in the old port district overlooking traditional fishing boats and yachts. The main beach is rather narrow and pebbly, but not far from here you will find some more attractive places.
Kos is traditionally thought to be the native land for Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine. In ancient times the island was renowned for its salutary temple of Asklepieion, founded after the Hippocrates death. Probably it was here that Hippocrates taught his pupils. Still the oldest tree in Europe grows here. Nowadays this small town houses the International Hippocratic Institute and the Hippocratic Museum, dedicated to the legendary ancient doctor. Ruins of the other temples dedicated to ancient gods can be found here along with the Persian, Turkic, Roman and Byzantine, which contributed their mite to the island’s history. There are ruins of Roman baths and amphitheatres and the 14-century fortress built by The Knights of Saint John of Rhodes found on the island. It is also a convenient starting point for sea excursions to Turkey and the neighboring islands.
But it is not only history that attracts people to Kos. The island is well developed and offers a good choice of facilities for those who want to have a good rest. According to many European experts, Kos is one of the healthiest places of the Mediterranean. The capital – Kos – is full f greenery. It was built and planned in a way to suite the demands of tourists coming here. Shady paths stretching from the centre are excellent for walks and bicycle riding. Those who are fond of Greek cuisine and local wines are invited by cosy cafes and restaurants overlooking the picturesque panorama of the sea port.
Moreover, Kos is the cleanest corners of our planet, and it is definitely worth coming here.
