According to The Times, most of us have given up hope on the prospect of a hot summer. Consequently, travel specialists Expedia have witnessed a sudden increase in searches for holiday options abroad. Dubrovnik, located on the southern Croatian coast, saw the biggest increase compared to last year, with 129 percent more searches, with such usual suspects as Hawaii and Spain being popular among those looking for last minute holidays also.

Dubrovnik may not jump out as a number one summer destination, but it has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Adriatic. The region boasts a Mediterranean climate with average highs of around 38°C during the summer months. The rolling hills of the mainland are complimented by a group of islands, collectively known as Elaphiti, which are scattered along the coast and lightly populated. Lopud can be reached by boat from Dubrovnik, and is famed for its beaches and monastery.

The walled city of Dubrovnik has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for thirty years, and despite suffering some damage from conflict in the early nineties, has now been completely rebuilt. Outside of the city walls, Fort of St. Lawrence overlooks the cliffs in protection of the Kalarinja harbour. The fortress has an intriguing history and is said to have been built in just three months to defend against the Venetians, but later became symbolic of the freedom of the nation. Today it is used as a theatre.

For those eager to get into the water, the Dubrovnik coastline also offers one of the most unforgettable diving experiences in the world with a rich and unspoiled array of marine life to view. The coast is also very popular with those who like to fish, the regions is rich in both small and bigger game fish ranging from sea bass and bream to tuna and swordfish. Spearfishing is also allowed in the area, though there are regulations in place to ensure against over-fishing.

The city also boasts a selection of art and entertainment. The Museum of Modern Art was built in the Renaissance/Gothic style and holds a diverse collection using a variety of media. In July, The Dubrovnik Summer Festival begins with theatre and music, and it is the perfect time to sample the clubs, bars and restaurants on offer in the city.
