The Eternal City of RomeSubmitted by Vasilisa Thu, 29 Nov 2007
Rome is the capital of Italy and one of the most important cities in the world. Long ago it used to be a political and cultural center of the Roman Empire. “The city all roads lead to”, “the city of seven hills” – that’s all about Rome. One can hardly count all its arenas, monuments and temples, it’s impossible to unravel all the mysteries of the Eternal City…but it’s easy to fall in love with its magnificence and beauty at the very first sight. Some people say that the journey to Italy is absolutely incomplete if you haven’t visited its heart – the fascinating city of Rome.
Let’s try to mention at least some of the most interesting places in Rome. Sights Vatican – the smallest state in the world. Its museum, founded by Pope Julius II (1503-1513) is considered to be one of the best. Greek marbles, Etruscan gold, Egyptian mummies…the very air of the museum is filled with history! Piazza di Spagna – the most famous square of the city. It is surrounded by baroque buildings of the 17-18 century, the famous boat-shaped fountain is situated in the centre of it. Trevi Fountain – the most famous and probably the most beautiful Rome fountain is the masterpiece by Nicola Salvi who based his project on Bernini's design. The latter was a great admirer of theatrical effects what resulted in the grand outward appearance of the fountain. St Peter’s Church – the biggest and the most magnificent church not only in Rome but in the entire world. This is the last creation of the renowned architect Bernini. The church was erected on the place where Peter The Apostle suffered martyrdom. Roman Forum – one of the most ancient places of Rome. Here the Senate and the citizens spoke their minds, deciding the fate of the Roman Empire. Palatine – the oldest inhabited area of the city. This is the place where Roman history began after perfidious Romulus killed Remus. Nowadays the hill is still considered to be one of the best locations in the city. Museums Capitoline Museums – the first museum of the city. It is made up of two separate buildings. The Palazzo Nuovo houses an amazingly rich collection of Roman sculpture (including the original of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius); the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Braccio Nuovo house ancient sculptures as well as Renaissance and Baroque art. Borghese Gallery – houses a delightful collection of the Reneissance and Baroque paintings, including the masterpieces by Titan, Raphael, Caravaggio and also the sculptures by Bernini and Canova. Museo Napoleonico – the museum is devoted to Napoleon. It contains books, art and other things that belonged to the French emperor. Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna – situated in the palace, the museum houses the Italian collection of modern art. Works of some non-Italian artists (like Kandinsky, Klimt, and Cezanne) are also represented.
