If you are considering a holiday across the pond, the US is probably one of the most diverse countries in terms of natural attractions. From the Beaches of California, to the Colorado Rockies there are a large number of landscapes and environments to explore for families and the more adventurous alike.

New York State, despite being home to one of the most visited cities in the world, is also a popular destination for those seeking American holidays with a natural element. Here are some suggestions and things to remember if you are considering a trip to The Empire State.

Finger Lakes are located in the central west of the state. They get their name from their long thin shape with the longest, Seneca and Cayuga, stretching to around 40 miles in length. The region is also well-known for producing wine which bears similarities to the Rhine area in Germany. Today, there are around a hundred wineries in the region, with many having opened their doors to the public since the 70s. The Museum of the Earth is also located in Ithaca.

The famous Niagara Falls lies on the border of New York State and Ontario Canada to the west of Finger Lakes. The massive falls were formed as a result of glaciation 10,000 years ago and now consist of two huge waterfalls, called American and Horseshoe, over which water flowing from the southernmost Lake Erie flows northwards to Lake Ontario. The spectacular falls are both a daytime and night time attraction with available tours and accessible walkways.

To the north east of the state, Adirondack Park is the largest historic landmark in the country and covers over six million acres. Canoe Camping is popular in the area, due to the abundance of over 3000 lakes and 30,000 miles of rivers and the wilderness land in-between. The area is also popular with hikers - many of which travelling from New York City and Vermont.

For those considering travel to the US this summer, holidaymakers flying to the country are being reminded that the now need to apply for an ESTA. The ESTA (or Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is now required for anybody wishing to stay in the country for under three months and must be completed online no later than 72 hours before departure.
