For many years the Haliburton Highlands, located approximately 2 ½ hours north east of Toronto, was known primarily as a sleepy summer tourist and cottage region, admired for its many lakes, rivers and beautiful scenery and its large contingent of artists and craftspeople. Today, the Highlands is gaining a reputation as a popular year-round tourist destination, offering visitors to the area lots to see and do, with a wide array of exciting recreational activities, cultural events and a broad range of tourist accommodation properties. There has been a steady increase in the number of activities that attract summer visitors to the area. Each year there is much more for cottagers and resort guests to see and do.

Haliburton has long been a sportsman's paradise. From boating to fishing to camping, Haliburton's many lakes and rugged natural terrain have always presented the best that nature has to offer. For the golfer, the area boasts five golf courses and a number of driving ranges. Whether you are into hiking, biking or ATVing, you will never run out of trails in Haliburton. Geo-caching, paint ball, kayaking lessons, canoe excursions, and wake boarding school are just a few of the more unusual sports and activities available in the Highlands.

The Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve has many interesting attractions for the whole family, including A Walk in The Clouds canopy tour, The Wolf Centre, concerts in the wilderness, solar powered telescopes, astronomy events and wolf howls. At the northern border of Haliburton sits the world-renowned Algonquin Provincial Park with its many visitor attractions, including horseback trail rides with South Algonquin Trails. Some scenic locations in Haliburton that visitors to the area wouldn't want to miss are the Dorset Fire Tower, the Hawk River Log Chute and the Minden Wild Water Reserve. As well, cultural attractions such as the RD Lawrence Place, the Minden, Haliburton and Stanhope Museums are sure to be of interest to visitors.

Haliburton's large and diverse artist community is one driving force behind many new initiatives in the Haliburton area. Haliburton's motto is A Natural Work Of Art, which speaks to the area's natural beauty but also to the many wonderful artistic and cultural happenings in the area. The region has numerous artist studios, galleries, museums, craft shows and fairs. The Agnes Jamieson Gallery located in Minden and The Rails End Gallery in Haliburton Village both display remarkable works of art by local and guest artists and offer many exciting cultural events of interest to tourists. Haliburton is home to the prestigious Haliburton School of the Fine Arts, where visitors head to the Highlands each summer to take one of many arts courses offered. The Highlands Summer Festival, which is in its 10th season, presents a summer theatre series at the new Northern Lights Pavilion for the Performing Arts. World class opera has made a home in Haliburton with a summer school and live professional performances. Over at the Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve spectacular out-door live theatre performances of the Forest Festival wow audiences every August.

Haliburton's economy is driven by tourism, mainly due to people visiting cottage resorts and vacation homes in the summer months. Employment in this region is based primarily on supplying the needs of this seasonal population. Lakeside cottage resorts and country inns are not only businesses that depend on the strong inflow of tourists. In a region where tourism supports the local economy, making the community more attractive to visitors is of vital importance. The remarkable growth in the number of recreational and cultural activities available in Haliburton will allow it to develop into a world-class destination resort area.
