Tourists looking for fun things to do in Muskoka this summer should look a few kilometres north on Highway 11 to the north Muskoka town of Sundridge, Ontario. On August 14, 15 and 16, 2009, the Sundridge Sunflower Festival returns to "Sunny Sundridge" on the shores of Lake Bernard. Offering a wide assortment of events, entertainment and attractions, The Sunflower Festival has something for every member of the family.

Revived after a decade's absence, the annual Sundridge Sunflower Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever. Festivities begin on Friday night at dusk with "The Attack of the Outdoor B-Movies", an outdoor screening of some very entertaining B-movies from the 50s. Saturday's full slate of events will run from morning until late at night and will feature such attractions as a car show, an art exhibit, craft vendors, baking contests, canoe races, cardboard boat races, face painting, wagon rides, sidewalk artists, live entertainment, live music, and much more. A family-friendly street dance is scheduled to take place Saturday evening. On Sunday, the 2009 Royal Bank Sundridge Triathlon will take place.

Throughout the festival weekend, visitors can choose to indulge in a variety of delicious food options. The Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion will each host a barbecue. A tea will be served by The Harmony Guild at the Sundridge Community Centre on Main Street. Patti's Fries will have their chip wagon out, and the Red Brick Cafe will be serving gourmet coffee and sweets in the park. Zion United Church will host a butter tart contest, and the Agricultural Society will have popcorn and hotdogs for sale at the fairgrounds.

Festival organizers have been working for over a year to make the festival a reality. Many Sundridge and area organizations are participating, including the Sundridge Lions Club, The Royal Canadian Legion, the Sundridge Harmony Guild, the local horticultural society, the Strong Agricultural Society, Burk's Falls Arts and Crafts, the Almaguin Highlands Council for the Arts, and a number of local churches and businesses.

Sundridge area resort operator Michael Piraino, owner of Northridge Inn & Resort (http://www.northridgeinn.com), an upscale all-season resort on Lake Bernard, is pleased that the festival has once again returned to Sundridge. "The Sundridge Sunflower Festival is a fabulous event for the town of Sundridge and one that our resort guests are sure to enjoy. The organizers should be commended. The Almaguin Highlands and north Muskoka region depends on tourism. Special events like the Sunflower Festival draw more tourists to the area. Almaguin north Muskoka is a beautiful vacation destination, but we are not all that well-known. The more exposure that North Muskoka receives, the better it is for tourism and the local economy," states Piraino.

With so much going on, the Sundridge Sunflower Festival is certain to be a major draw for the north Muskoka area, this year and in the years to come.
