Woodstock - The Canadian Version

Woodstock Ontario is a picturesque city situated along the Thames river in Soutwestern Ontario. While certainly not the most famous Woodstock in North America, the city still has it's own charm. It has a population just over 35 000 people and is about 128 km. from Toronto.

It is commonly referred to as the "Dairy Capital of Canada" and promotes itself as "The Friendly City". Woodstock's urban centre is growing in size, but the city still has a very rural and comfortable slower pace. It might not be a hot tourist destination - but it definitely has it's own unique charm and you might be surprised by some of its entertaining attractions:

1. Cowapalooza!: That is not a typo. Woodstock is known for it's dairy production. It also has a $4 000 statue honoring a prized butterfat producing cow known as Snow Countess. Woodstock definitely has an affinity for dairy cows. Just look at the acronym of the City Of Woodstock - C.O.W.

Cowapalooza is an annual festival that is dedicated to family entertainment. It offers a lot of kid related activities - there is a midway, classic carnival foods like cotton candy and competitions like soapbox derbies and milking contests. It doesn't leave the adults out though. The event provides quality entertainment, a free rock concert that draws about 5 000 people, and the ever important - beer gardens.

2. Lighthouse of Icons: If you are interested in religious history - Woodstock should definitely be on your short list of places to visit in Ontario. The Studite Fathers are members of one of the oldest monastic orders of the Church. Their formation goes back to pre-schism times. In Woodstock they have a religious complex which includes the Lighthouse of Icons which is a 40 meter high structure that is octagonal in shape.

The lighthouse shape was intentionally used to instill a feeling of if being a beacon to help you find your way in the world. It has an observation deck with a great panoramic view of Woodstock. It is also home to a gallery that displays 88 religious icons plus valuable maps and displays. It is a popular destination for religious tourists and pilgrimages.

3. Birch Farms and Estate Winery: You don't have to drink just milk when you visit Woodstock! Located just north of the city is Birch Farms and Winery. It is a truly unique country experience and would feel like a different world to a city dweller. It is no wonder that this is a popular destination for class trips during the school year.

It offers many country experiences. You can pick your own apples, pick your own pumpkins and there is even a children's playground and corn maze. Parents who bring their children do not need to leave empty handed either. The on site winery offers a selection of fruit wines made from local Ontario produce. Varieties include apple, peach, pear and many others. If you want a gift that is sure to please, combine the wine with preserves, cheeses, candles or glassware to create a gift basket made to impress.

Woodstock is a city that is not afraid of its rural routes. It is refreshing to visit somewhere that embraces what makes it special. Events like Cowapalooza and statues like Snow Countess only add to the charm of this city.

It has all the modern amenities you need to live your life, but it has a coziness and appeal that would not be mistaken for anything but rural Ontario. "The Friendly City" is not just a clever motto, it is exactly what it is.
