Yorke Peninsula: the fish that didn’t get away!

Submitted by medharuby

There are many holiday destinations which will offer the chance of a fine catch of fish, and an equally mouth-watering range of recipes. However, few can match the Peninsula’s offer of the chance to catch your own fish, prawn or crab.

And mind you, your own catch is certainly the best fish in the world. That is why Yorke promises the avid self-sufficient traveler some real fun near the ocean. Even the tourism department entices you with the promise that here you get a ‘free lunch’ – you‘ll find blue-swimmer crabs, crayfish or garfish by the ‘’bucket-load’ for free. Enticing, huh?

Easily connected by land and water, the Peninsula is just 90 minutes drive from Adelaide. Hot summers and cold winters give a nice contrast, and while the area may not remind you of the Mediterranean, it is just perfect for outdoor living and adventures.

Yorke’s primary attractions are the natural parks which combine the pleasures of easy accessibility, exquisite scenery and plenty of flora and fauna. The Innes National Park is situated on the south-west tip of Yorke, and is rightly famous for its breathtaking coastal scenery. Many offshore islands are visible from here, including Chinaman’s Hat. The Park is full of trails and camp sites, so bushwalking enthusiasts will definitely not be disappointed.

The Western Grey Kangaroos and Emus, along with birds like Mallee Fowls, Western whipbirds, sea-eagles and Ospreys are some of the more famous residents of this Park. The coastline has some of Australia’s most celebrated surfing beaches as well.

You can escape to the Troubridge Island Conservation Park – a world separated by water with a relaxed ambience of its own. The lighthouse situated on the coast is especially famous. The Leven Beach Conservation Park has some of the finest natural beaches, walking trails, scenic coastline and fishing opportunities. The Clinton Conservation Park is equally famous for its birdlife and its mangrove ecosystem.

Walking is such a delight in Yorke that there are more than a dozen celebrated walks and short treks. The enchanting scenery makes the treks popular with many tourists and international visitors. Among the more famous ones are Stansbury Coastal Trail, Kadina, Moonta and Walllaroo Heritage Trails, the Edithburgh Environmental Walks, Barkers Rocks Trail and others.

Of course we enticed you with fishing, so how can we avoid the specifics ? Fishing is a national pastime here … from boat, beaches, jetty or rock. Among the great fishing spots are Androssan to Port Vincent, Stansbury, Edithburgh to Sultana Point, Troubridge to Marion Bay to Corny Point to Turton, Port Victoria and others.

Among the more prized catches are blue swimmer crabs, King George Whiting, Southern Salmon, squid, Garfish, Snapper, prawns, oysters and others.

Yorke Peninsula is full of adventure, and people come from far and away for an opportunity to indulge the James Bond within themselves. It is particularly famous for the many tough surfing coastlines. Among the more famous are Chinaman’s, Ethel Wreck, West Cape, Richards, Pondalowie Bay, Trespassers, Baby lizards, Salmon Hole, Daly Head and Spits.

There are also two Maritime Heritage Trails which provide excellent opportunities for all forms of diving. Among the more famous diving sites are Edithburgh Jetty, Point Gilbert, Wardang Island, Parsons Beach reef and Stetson Bay jetty. The Investigator Strait has one of the Maritime Heritage Trails and has 26 ship wreckages. The Zanoni Shipwreck is also very famous as the most intact 19th century shipwreck.

Of course, with so much to do, you must be getting hungry. Don’t worry. At Yorke Peninsula you shall find the most exquisite assortment of local and exotic dishes. The eateries and pubs in the region are quite rightly popular for their products and relaxed atmosphere.
