Names Change but the Experience is Still Magical
Shangri-La Caribe is now Mahekal Beach Resort
For over 30 years one of the most popular beach cabana resorts on the Yucatan peninsula has been Shangri La Caribe in Playa del Carmen. In the old days it was a couple miles from the center of town, an easy walk down the beach. Thankfully, for long time visitors and new guests, it has remained true to the beachfront cabana resort roots. With its signature comfort and personal service, wide expanse of white sand beach and sparkling turquoise waters draw delighted vacationers back year after year. It is a unique property and what some call a magical experience amongst the conglomeration of mega luxury hotels and pricey condos. They have always had a disired niche compared with the typical Playa del Carmen hotels.

The name change was precipitated by the transfer of the resort to new ownership earlier this year. Originally the new owners planned to tear down the resort and build more luxury condos. But after operating Shangri La Caribe for a year and witnessing its immense popularity and customer loyalty, it was decided to continue operating in the tradition of the original Shangri La Caribe.

Speaking with general manager Emilio Palazuelos, many past guests have commented regularly that "this is a magical place, thus sparked the "new name", Mahekal Beach Resort.

The Mahekal Beach Resort (Mayan inspired word for magical) has been busy making improvements and updating the facilities. The Adventura dining has been remodeled to increase the enjoyment of larger groups such as weddings. "We have also discounted our wedding packages and room rates by almost 30%, says Palazuelos. Its a beautiful site of a wedding, honeymoon, family union, or group retreat". Mahekal Beach Resort has also added new hammocks, a fresh coat of paint and a number of other landscaping improvements that guests are sure to appreciate.
