Pontins announced that its bookings for 2009 were up by as much as 30% compared to last year because of, rather than in spite of, the current recession. As British holidaymakers choose to holiday in the UK rather than spend money flying abroad, British holiday parks are enjoying a revival of interest in the traditional British holiday.

As a result of the increase in holidaymakers in the UK Pontins announced £50 million worth of investment in holiday parks in the UK, which includes the firm taking on an additional 2,000 staff for its holiday parks throughout the country.

In Pontins' heyday the firm had almost thirty separate holiday parks in the UK, but as the British holidaymaker chose to travel abroad instead of stay in Britain, the traditional British holiday went into decline, and Pontins suffered as a result. Pontins now only has six holiday camps in Britain.

Ocean Parcs now owns Pontins and it's announced a £50 million investment plan, refurbishing the holiday parks ready for the rejuvenated British holiday industry. Part of the plan also includes the hiring of first class entertainment, which includes the likes of Toyah Wilcox and eighties girl group Bananarama.

As the British holiday industry is enjoying its revival based on price, and the fact that many Brits can no longer afford to holiday abroad, Pontins remains competitive on that front with offers of £20 per person for three and four night self catering holidays in holiday parks nationwide.
