Niagara Falls is very well-known. You may not have seen it closely in person, but you must have seen it in movies or pictures. Did you know that it is actually composed of three falls? Yes, it is true and aside from that there are still several interesting facts on Niagara Falls which will be discussed later.

Niagara Falls consists of three falls, namely: American Fall, Bridal Veil Falls, and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The American Falls is 176 ft. tall including the rocks at the bottom at the base, but its actual height is 70 ft. only. The length of its brink is 1,060 ft. and has water volume of 150, 000 U.S. gallons per second. There are two hydroelectric plants which draw water into their reservoirs prior to the falls. Their intake greatly affects the volume of water flowing over the falls. The amount of water being siphoned away depends on two variables; the time of year and the time of the day.

Flow is greatest in the daytime during peak tourist season, which is on June, July, and August. In the event of emergency, the flow can be somewhat reduced by the hydroelectric companies increasing their intake.

The Bridal Veil Falls, on the other hand, is named for its appearance. It is located next to the American Falls separated by a small piece of land, called Luna Island and its height is 120 ft. It is described as unique because you can drive your car right underneath it. This makes a perfect place to stop on your way to Dry Falls and Cullasaja Falls. To get the best views, you can drive your car under it or walk beneath the falls. Hmm, I think I like the
idea of walking beneath the falls. How about you?

The Canadian Horseshoe Falls has a length of 2,600 ft. for its brink and the water volume is 600,000 gallons per second. It is called horseshoe because of its shape. One of the very interesting facts on Niagara Falls is that, according to the United States Geological Survey of Niagara Falls, it appears that almost 1/3 of the Canadian Falls lies within the US Territory.

Additional interesting facts on Niagara Falls include:

o The flow over the American Falls was stopped completely for several months in 1969 to enhance its appearance, but it turned out that the expense would be too much.
o The flow was stopped over both falls on the 30th of March 1848 due to an ice jam in the upper river.
o The word Niagara is derived from the Iroquois Indian word Onguiaahra, which means “the strait”.
o The movies Niagara and Superman were filmed in part at the Niagara Falls.
o In the past ten years, 2 daredevils lost their lives in their attempt to conquer Niagara.
o In the evenings, intense spotlights bathe the falls with different shades of colors.
o A 63 year old female school teacher was the first person to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive.

If you are going to enumerate the many interesting facts on Niagara Falls, your mouth will get dry, I tell you. Anybody can have a story to tell about the Niagara Falls, even just by looking at its magnificent wonders. How much
more if you are going to tell all the interesting facts about Niagara Falls.
