Southampton is a city situated in Hampshire and is the largest in the county. It is classed as one of Britain's most historic ports and is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. For a cultural experience of Southampton visitors can go to the Southampton City Art Gallery where regular exhibitions are held, displaying various collections from ancient culture through to cutting edge.

The gallery is internationally recognised as it showcases magnificent European art pieces from over six centuries ago to present day.To explore the cities historical foundations you can go to Southampton Maritime Museum situated in The Wool House which is regarded as the sole medieval warehouse still in operation in Southampton today. The building was constructed in the 1400's and initially stored wool until the 1600's, when the wool industry declined in demand. The house was then used as a prison in the nineteenth century and became a museum in the 1960's that is now internationally renowned.

Another historic museum that may be worth a visit is Southampton's Museum of Archaeology. Built in the 1400's, the museum was formally known as God's House Tower which was initially constructed as an artillery fortification. The name 'God's House' originated from a hospital close to the tower, named God's House Hospital. The museum illustrates the difference in time periods with regards to local changes and especially looks at the Roman, Saxon and Medieval times.

A great way to spend the day in Southampton may be to visit Central Parks which has been celebrated and awarded with the Green Flag award for five years running. Located in the city centre, the park has a variety of things to offer visitors including sports facilities such as tennis and basketball courts. In addition to this, there is also a skating area, cricket pitch and children's play area.

For shopping, visitors can go to Westquay Shopping Centre, the focal shopping area in the entire south coast region. Situated in the heart of the city, there are over 100 popular retail stores to choose from including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, New Look, Bodyshop, Apple, Accessorize and many more.

Visitors can also explore various entertainment facilities at Leisure World which can be found on West Quay Road. The entertainment centre has a multiplex cinema, showcasing the latest mainstream films. You can also visit the Grosvenor Casino and various nightclubs such as Oceana nightclub alongside a variety of stylish bars and restaurants.

There are tours and guided walks available for visitors that would like to see the sights in Southampton. A great way to do this is to board the Hythe Ferry, which provides spectacular views of the sea. The ferry begins its journey every 30 minutes passing through Southampton, Hythe Pier and Town Quay. Here, you are able to witness the oldest pier train in the world that has been noted in the Guinness Book of World Records. The guided walks give visitors a chance to hear stories and approach historic buildings that held significance to the seafront attacks on the city. The tours are an illustration of the foundations of Southampton dating back to the 1400's.
