Cornish coastal hideaway

Padstow in Cornwall is a picturesque harbour town where you can relax and watch the world go by. Take a walk around the shops or blow the cobwebs away with a wonderful trek along the coast - the scenery is simply breathtaking.

For good food and drink, there's plenty on offer and if your purse strings are tight, the best tasting, well-priced food can be found at the Custard Diner, along with fabulous service and a homely charm. Plus there are plenty of great pubs, fish and chip shops, and, of course, celebrity chef Rick Stein's fish restaurant.

If you get the chance, head to a tasting at Camel Valley Vineyard, where they produce quality red, white and rose, plus award-winning bubbly that's considered amongst the best in the world.

The best time to visit Padstow is out of season when fewer tourists are around.

Cool Cymru

Conwy is tucked away in a corner of North Wales, and is renowned for its castle, which overlooks the estuary of the River Conwy. The imposing fort and walls date back to Edwardian times.
There are daily tours around the castle, or just walk along the town walls for amazing views across the water towards the mountains of Snowdonia.

Visit the smallest house in Britain, which sits on the quayside and has an Alice in Wonderland sized door. Or take a look around the delicious Conwy Muscle Museum and be sure to eat a few as you go!

If the weather's fine, take boat trip around the bay - it's a great way to see this quiet, little town in all its glory.

Perched on the port with stunning views, the Quay Hotel is the perfect place to stay if you want a peaceful, relaxing time.

Cavernous delights

If you fancy a city break without blowing the budget, Liverpool, last year's European Capital of Culture, has something for everyone.

Discover the 1846 re-developed Albert Dock, home to the Tate Gallery, Merseyside Maritime Museum, TV studios and a range of shops.

Or for a spot of retail therapy, you'll find all the big name high street stores in the city centre. Meanwhile the Cavern Designer Shopping Centre, St John's Shopping Centre and Clayton Square have a host of smaller, fashionable boutiques.

But for a taste of pop culture, where better to go than the Cavern Club, where the Beatles started their career.
